I wrote the topic for 3320 Private purchase and have made the purchase with receipt Saturday.
The seller has a trailer the had special made for carrying this 3320 with it's FEL and BH plus he added a metal tool box in front. It has removable fenders. The 3320 will arrive on it.
The seller of the 3320 is asking $3000 for the trailer, but will drop lower. My wife and I think we do not need a trailer as the JD location is so close (5 minutes) they could pick/deliver.
Now I fell stupid asking, but from your experiences will we find we need it. I really could not see where we would.

Thank you,
Jim

Just depends. I personally could not do without a trailer.

You say its built for the tractor. Can it be used for anything else? I use mine for hauling out boats, cars, trucks, ATV's, lumber, my tractor, others tractors, ect, ect, ect. My trailer is just a plain old wood decked 18' tandem axle trailer with brakes on one axle.

As for the price, it would have to be a very nice trailer to pay $3000 for. You could get a new 20' flat bed for less than that and it could be used for everything, not just hauling a specific tractor.

Can easily drive the tractor to the JD location if needed.

In 11 years, I've not needed a trailer for my 4300.

IIRC my local deal who is also about 5 - 10 minutes away tells me the charge for pickup is $37 - so for a $3K trailer, if your situation is similar that's about 40 round trips to and from the dealer. For a 5 minute trip you could drive the tractor, unless it is inoperative.

Unless you can think of other uses for the trailer, I'd pass. the other thing to consider is trailer prices in your area. For $3K I could buy an brand new trailer that would do the job.

As I am in the research mode before I buy a trailer ...may I suggest that a $3000 trailer sounds a bit expensive if you will only use it once or twice a year.

I have found 1/2 a dozen delaers within 200 miles of me that have 16 to 18 foot car trailers and equipment trailers in the 7K weight for around $1800 to $2800 and these are BRAND NEW, not something used.

I will have many uses for my trailer

- My Tractor to till and hog out people
- My & Dad's 1940 Buick
- Lumber

Just a thought.

Also remember that you need a decent tow vehicle too and a good hitch on that vehicle.

No sub compact cars or compact trucks with a 4 banger

I am about to buy a tractor and I already have a friend who would like use my tractor. I have had similar thoughts about a trailer, but I would have to buy a new truck to haul the trailer and the trailer is going to set me back another 2-3K. I told him if he pays for a flatbed tow truck to haul it both ways he can use it. It's 4 mile each way, I figure about $100 dollars or so round trip.

Great discussion and I laughed at Manganos ...true but funny.

I had not checked trailer prices in the area because we did not see a need for the trailer. I started having second thoughts, but you settled my mind...no need for the trailer.

Pick up by the JD dealer and Polaris dealer are inexpensive (when needed). You are right that it would take a lot of dealer pickups to reach even a portion of the trailer cost.

I have a trailer hitch on my F150, but watch out if you see me on the road with a trailer.. much less a loaded trailer!

Sorry if this thread seemed stupid, but I just do not know some of the things related to what I am going to do or trying to do on the land. I am Blessed to have a good farm family working a portion of the land and good neighbors. I will learn from them

Will send photos of the 3320, and projects before, during and after.

Thanks again.

Unless you plan to hire out with your rig you don't need a trailer for it, a trailer can always be handy around a place, but he is asking to much for this trailer, you can pick up one much cheaper than this, This Trailer maybe heavy built, but for a tamden 16ft. to use around a place, to haul what ever, can be picked up for a 1000 or so bucks,

Sorry if this thread seemed stupid,

Jim.....never feel that your questions or requests here are deemed stupid.

I for one would think that anyone who would come along and call another members request for help or advice "stupid" are not worthy of TBN.

We are all here to ask and offer.

Some of us, myself included, are new and not up to speed on things and some are very knowledgeable in certain areas.

but I do not think there is any "one" member who honestly knows all the answers to all the questions.

Please post your questions and feel free to offer answers without the fear of being thought of in any way other than welcome

Some random stuff to ponder.....
I own a 16 foot car trailer that can haul my 3320 and one implement. It's a little short for ideal tractor hauling....but it gets the job done....without a huge investment. I don't haul my tractor unless I have to....but may haul it more after I upgrade my tow vehicle in the next month (both my daughters families needs some work done). I do haul some implements and lumber from time to time. A haul by my dealer to his shop would cost me $200+ round trip. I have $1600 invested in a good used trailer. Just hauled my tractor for fluid in rears....saved a service call by tire shop. Its always nice having the ability to haul stuff when you want / need to. No insurance costs on trailers....license every three years. Tires will dry rot before you can wear 'em out. If I didn't have a trailer....I'd want to own one....there is always something to haul. (I also have two small utility trailers....and they get used ALLOT).

Note to self: Sell it in ten years and get back what you paid for it....maybe more? Keep deck "oiled" and tires in shade.

I struggled with the same decision when I purchased my tractor, thinking I needed (aka. wanted) a trailer.

Just a couple of things to consider.

My dealer charges $25 round trip for pickup and delivery (had to do this twice in 5 years for warranty issues).

Our insurance State Farm, will not cover the tractor off our property if I am driving it, but would cover it on a trailer if the vehicle towing it is insured with them.

You have to store and maintain a trailer, if storing indoors, you have to constantly work/walk around it. If stored outside, you have to worry about rust and/or theft.

A trailer if possible, can also be used to haul other things such as cars, materials, etc.

A trailer can make you have lots of new friends, just like having a pickup.

I am sure there are more, but that is all I can think of right now.

If you decide to haul your tractor on a trailer make sure you have insurance to cover loss or damage. Mine was not covered off my property, had to get a different policy.

Everybody's situation is so completely different it's impossible to say whether you will or won't need one. I have not needed one since I have my first tractor (2007.) The dealer where I bought my 3320 has service specials a few times a year that includes pick up and delivery, I usually just wait to have any major service done until then. When I damaged my 3320 the bill was so I high I just asked them to include the pick up and return and they agreed.

In fact if I had a trailer there are more than a few people at work that would be asking to borrow my tractor all of the time, and that would get tiresome pretty quickly. Now I just say "sorry, no way to get it there!"

All good points..thanks. Two days until I get to enjoy the 3320. Looking forward to ditching.

Now I have to put in a well as there is no water or electricity. I am looking at a self dug well, solar and windmill. But also putting in a regular well and running it when needed with my generator. Gotta keep the tractor and UTV clean as I have learned from the postings.

Next week bring in 60 tons of crushed concrete for road repairs within the land. Renting a BobCat to not mess up the 3320.

Then in late Dec rent a Bobcat with Forestry cutter to make a 1.5 mile trail to the river and other locations on the land I have not seen except in Google!

Hope all have a Blessed week and year. Thank you all.

Jim

You can't drive it there if it is broke ;)

:D
Very true, but then prolly can't drive it onto the trailer either.

And its a JD, so ...... :)

I've hauled my tractor a few times to do some jobs, but found renting a trailer for those few times has been the cheaper way to go. Also, if I owned one, I'd be faced with those who always want to borrow it and don't know when to bring it back. :) That happens with my 12 ft trailer.

Suit yourself, but asking for trouble if loaning out your tractor.
Big discussion on TBN about it, and the consensus seems to be - go with the tractor as operator.

I agree. I don't have a trailer right now as I sold my 16' Hudson dual axle BUT I always put a winch on my trailers. You never know/knew when the Chevelle would need some help as it ate u-joints for breakfast, lunch and dinner ;)

I will be there as operator and probably let him operate it a little because I think he is going to want to play with it.
