You could skip the bare metal strip with a good pressure wash and apply Black Star rust inhibitor. No top coating needed. Turn a black - dark purple color.

I just used Rustoleum Equipment enamel on a steel roof. I have high hopes

Farm Implement paint works for me

I have seen a two part epoxy used with good results. It was black, can not remember the manufacture.

Another vote for Valspar tractor and implement paint, for which they also offer a spraying thinner and hardener. But also won't say anything negative about Rustoleum, I'm actually using that on my trailer right now, because it was easier to source locally. Both are alkyd enamels, and the durability of both more dependent on thickness (coats) and cure time, than any difference between the two products.

I have used 2-part products as well, but likely not woth the effort on a trailer. Most are linear polyurethanes with isocyanate hardeners, that are very sensitive to moisture. There are just too many opportunities for that to go wrong if you're spraying outdoors, unless you happen to live in Arizona.

Time to overhaul my 16’ equipment trailer, and while I have the floor torn off of it, I have been thinking about painting it. Does anyone out there have a recommendation for paint for the metal on my trailer? I’m sure some people just shoot Rust oleum on there, but I’m wondering if there is a better/longer-lasting option that I can shoot from a pneumatic sprayer.

Thanks!

Without proper prep, Nothing works

With proper prep, just about anything will do the job.

Heck, from my experience the mfg of most trailers don;t even use primer!

I painted a trailer decades ago with Dupont Imron and looks like new...

A friend was moving and gave me the paint...
I used to sell that stuff 50 years ago. If it approached $100 a gallon then, what does it cost today? Google didn't really tell me.

You also need to be very careful using Imron or other similar products. If you are not, you could destroy your lungs and die.
