trailer Question

   / trailer Question #21
My free advice on trailers is: always get it longer than your typical load. Just because it fits on there doesn't mean the load will be balanced. Sometimes, things roll along like there's nothing back there and sometimes you feel like sneakers in a dryer. On those occasions, you want to move it up or back a bit to get things right so you need some extra space to work with.

With the tires on the trailer, the absolute most total weight you can haul would be 6480 pounds. The trailer, if even halfway decently built, should weigh around 2000 pounds. That leaves a grand total of 4480 pounds to haul. With what you describe, the trailer is too small in nearly every aspect; length, braking capacity, and load hauling capacity. If it has a railing system built into the trailer (i.e. not just simply a flat bed), then it is a light duty utility trailer designed to haul lawn mowers and the like. Those trailers can be purchased brand new for $1500 all day long.

Jack and Brian; Thanks for the nice words. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I really like this trailer myself. I've dragged a number of different ones around over the years, granted some were rented and some were used and in rough shape, but I used one of these, and I liked it so much, I bought one. A friend of mine has an 18' Cronkite that I've hauled for him with a BobCat miniexcavator on board, and that's a nice trailer too. That also was a 12k trailer.

Brian, just let me know if you want a price, no problem! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well all, after much shopping, I finally purchased one yesterday. Its an 18' #10,000. I have it hooked with a 2 5/16 ball but it will also accept a pintle hitch. The trailer seems pretty nice, I just have to install some sort of box somewhere too keep the chains and other stuff. I will post pix if I get time. It has the fold down ramps, I didn't even think to look if it has storage for them under the trailer if I chose to remove them but I don't thinhk so. The price was 2350 which was consideribly less than I was expecting to pay and it seemed to be every bit of the quality of some of the others I looked at in the $3000 range. Thanks to everyone for your help

Brian; Just got back in town or I'd have replied sooner. Was upnorth with the TC.

Good for you on that trailer. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif What brand did you wind up with? Now all you need is a good set of tiedown chains and binders. The trip never ends, does it? LOL. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Photos ofcourse, where are they? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Sounds like a pretty good price too! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
