It's too bad that you don't have many used trailers to choose from. Like I mentioned, it seems that a person can't drive 5 miles around here without seeing some kind of trailer for sale. Add to that the various dealers and even the tractor dealerships that handle trailers, and I'm convinced that I'll buy used when I'm ready to purchase one. It'll save me some bucks that maybe I can throw at an extra implement.

Good luck on your search! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Kevin,

I don't see where you list what you will be towing with. I know there have been alot of discussion here about how much you can tow in relation to what the vehicle is rated for, but if the advise given is do not exceed the weight capacity of the trailer then why would you want exceed the tow capacity of the tow vehicle?

Have you checked with a trailer shop that rents trailers to see if they will sell a rental unit at a discounted price? I did and saved about $600 on a 1 yr old unit with brand new tires.

2002 F-350 Crew cab Turbo-diesel pick-up. Definitely up to the task. I phoned a couple of rental places local to me with no luck. I inquired to the trailer dealers if they ever get used inventory...yes they do, but no idea of the what and when. Meanwhile, my property gets more and more overgrown. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Thanks for the thoughts!

Garry-They are hard to find around here also for a reasonable price. You often see them but they want almost as much for a well used trailer as you can buy a new one for. And they get it. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I looked for over a year for a used 16'. I only need one on rare occasion, but hate borrowing my neighbors. Finally bought a 16' x 83" wide pipe rail 7000# GVWR tandem with bulldog hitch for $895. It does have used tires, but no more miles than I will put on, it will last forever.

Kevin, I just went through the same thing to haul a smaller tractor. I went with an 18' equipment trailer with 5200 lbs. axles and brakes on both axles. Several things swayed me to the larger capacity trailer. Foremost was I saw this as a one time purchase and wanted it to meet any future needs I had. In your case if you get a backhoe in the future the 7000 lbs. trailer will be over loaded. My tow vehicles were capable of hauling more than the 7000lbs. trailers as is yours. If you can haul a heavier load one of these days you will over load your trailer. My tractor, FEL and 4' mower is just under 18' and I bet yours will be longer. The benefits of brakes on both axles was crystal clear after feeling how much a trailer and tractor can push a 1-ton diesel dump as a tow vehicle. Finally that $500 extra didn't seem like that much to protect 20+K of equipment. Even on a 6 mile local run it only takes one idiot to pull out and ruin you whole day.

The GWVR of a vehicle is based on the brake capacity. Having brakes on two axles will let you push the weight towed plus it sure feels good when you really have to stop. Both of my trailers have two axle brakes. One has two 3500# axles the other has two 7000# axles

Kevin,

Rather than dealing with a 2' beaver tail taking from your useable bed space and heavy, cumbersome ramps every time you have to load and unload, have you considered a tilt bed trailer? You'll undoubtedly spend more money for one like this, but, in my experience, it's some of the best money you'll ever spend.

I have a 22' steel floored trailer with an electric hydraulic tilt bed which I've equipped with something over a dozen heavy D-ring tie downs, a couple locking steel tool boxes and an 8,000# Warn winch. With this set up I can load my tractor safely and have it secured in something under ten minutes. It'll only take a few times handling those rusty ramps and driving on to a snow covered, icy bed to make you wish you had spent the extra bucks.

Good luck with whatever you decide. I hope this helps. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Robert,
Sorry it took me so long to respond. Didn't notice the post directed at me. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

While it may not beef up the carrying capacity of the trailer, it will beef up the capacity of the deck. This is a wooden deck trailer. Before the added crossmembers, there was a 4' section of unsupported wood floor between each crossmember. Should a board break, the tractor could have easily fallen deep enough that removal of the tractor would be difficult. By adding the additional crossmembers, there is now no more than 2' of unsupported wood between crossmembers. This should reduce the chances of a wood plank breaking but if it did, the tractor shouldn't fall down far enough that it couldn't pull itself out of the hole.
