Trailer Sizes/Style recomnedations for 40hp tractor

That's not an easy question to answer. First, what are you pulling it with? Bumper pull or gooseneck? I expect your tractor and implements could easily exceed 7000 lbs so weight is a big factor. With the FEL, and a bushhog attached, the length will be more than you think. Measure it first, then add some.
The very best is a gooseneck deck over, with a 20 foot deck and a 5 foot dovetail, with flip up ramps. With two 7000 axles. That will do anything you need. Personally, I would definitely get a deck over. And simple flip up ramps. And if possible, a gooseneck. To me any bumper pull that will haul a 40 horse, with a FEL, loaded tires, a rotary cutter, will be at its limit. It goes back to doing your homework. The length, weight, maximum width (of the widest implement you could ever foresee having), and the rating of both the trailer and your truck all need to be accounted for.

My tractor with a grapple and rotary cutter is long! I have to pull forward with my FEL up to allow the ramps to fold back up flat. But then I can back up to center the weight and get my FEL down flat. It's not a problem

But a trailer is rarely too long, but often too short!

I agree. We just got our first gooseneck flatbed, I wouldn't go back to BP. GN's do have the issue of cutting tight on sharp bends. Our driveway has 2 sharp turns, I'm wanting to widen those by about 1 foot. We have some particular requirements that drove us to a tilt bed, but if hauling only a tractor I'd be OK with dovetail & ramps.

I'm in the process of buying a tractor, about 40-45hp and will also need a trailer. I most likely will be moving it with a brush hog or snowblower attached. What length is good, should i get folding ramps or hidden. I was thinking the folding might get in the way if I hang over back. How about width, I'm seeing 7' and 8.5'?

This is a 50HP tractor on a 16+2 BP Hudson equipment trailer.



This is a 23HP tractor with a Box Blade on the same trailer when I bought the package.

IF you get sliding ramps get some support. I like my folding ramps.

Get plenty of stake pockets. My equipment trailer only has 4.

Make sure you've got enough width. When I bought my trailer in '09 (it came with the tractor) 80" was plenty wide. In 2014 I had to reset my tractor rear tires to squeeze the new to me M4700 tractor between the fenders.

But also consider where you are going to haul it. My trailer barely fits in my suburban driveway.

That shows that the 16 +2 isn't big enough if he has a rotary cutter attached. It's amazing how long a tractor, FEL and a bush hog can get. Even more with a grapple. Often I also want to make one trip. I'll throw on a box blade as well. Get a 25 footer if your truck and budget will handle it .

Here's what i use for my 55 hp with loader and Brush hog, it tilts so no ramps needed. 20 foot x 82" no extra room at 20 foot. I realize my tractor is a little larger than most 40-45hp tractors but it shows just how fast you can run out of space...



It works well for my uses and being a fifth wheel and having a low center of gravity it sure pulls nice.

actually here is a picture of my 40 hp pto ford 3000 on the trailer to-still not much extra room...although i did get an 18 hp riding mower parked in front of the ford.

The stand up ramps also help you see where empty trailer is when backing up.

However he needs to be careful on how he wants to play the CDL weight game.
Will the OP's truck be rated to haul a 25 footer (usually 14K or greater)?
Will he be going out of Vermont and have to deal with other states enforcement and rules?

Bigger is not always better.

I would look into the Hudson bros trailer HSE. Or there deck over trailer for what you are wanting to haul

This trailer will be only for the occasional move, 60 miles one way. I have a 2015 F150 4x4 crew 6.5ft bed w/ 3.5 eco and hope this will pull like Ford claims....

I'm not familiar with the tow ratings of your truck . I imagine it will be at its upper limits. Saw this trailer locally and I like the style if your truck could handle it

You'll need to check the towing specs in your truck owners manual to see what your max trailer capacity is. A friend of mine has the same truck in a 2014 and the way his is equipped he can tow 8K.
A 40HP tractor w/loader, trailer, and an implement or two will be close to that weight.
He does claim his current truck with the V6 ECO seems more powerful than his previous truck which had the 5.4 V8.
