Law varies from state to state. In WI, it used to be that so long as you kept your feet wet, if you entered a stream legally, you could go up and down as far as you wanted. We just changed it - now they have to be below the normal high water line, but don't have to keep their feet wet. The key is, you have to legally enter the stream, which doesn't mean you can mosey across someones property to get there. Also means that, if the stream cuts back and forth 50 times in a 100 yards, you can't just cut across - must stay in the stream boundry.
Also just changed trespass laws - by law the presumption is that all land is considered private, and you are not allowed in. Landowners are no longer required to post to keep people out. If you are hunting and you don't know where you are, you must assume you are private lands and get out or get permission.
SHAME THAT, AS WELL ADVERTISED AS IT WAS, SOME PEOPLE DON'T GET THE IDEA.
Guess I don't understand - we were taught to ask first, ask every time ( or every year if the landowner said so ), to be sure you knew where you could and couldn't go and where you should or shouldn't be shooting, and to always say "thanks", especially w/ some wild game or a gift.
Been allowed into some nice places, even after others have wrecked it, just by respecting the owners rights.
How hard can it be...
