I think the personal attention I gave to my trespassers has slowed their activity. I heard some shooting last weekend, but not sure it was on my property or not since I did not go investigate, but certainly not close to the house like before.

What personal attention did you give them? Note: I only went back to posts on this page, didn't go all the way to the beginning of the thread.

Drove tractor to far corner, instructed them on property lines, made each one respond to my questions. Wasted an hour of their hunting time.

A few years back I found a treestand on the northern section of our 70 acres along with a number of cut saplings, etc. I was tempted to remove the stand but I elected to give the guy the benefit of the doubt and left him a note on the stand instead. He called me the same day and as it turns out he is the son of one of my neighbors who I share a portion of my northern border with. He was very apologetic and asked if I minded if he kept the stand there. I had no problem with him asking but I didn't grant permission as I had another friend hunting out that way and figured they'd be a bit too close. Long story short, this guy now keeps a very close eye on our property and gets in touch with me when he or his dad see activity out there. I think being slow to anger can at least occasionally pay dividends. I'm not saying to let people walk all over you but I've found that asking a caught trespasser to just call me to get permission before he wants to be on the property keeps things civil and they never call me anyway. For the most part, this has worked very well in my situation, although there are times when I've had to involve the police.

I have a friend who's former military, out on a combat disability. I asked him how many deer could he and his family use and he said "About seven!". Ok I said, that's how many we'll get this year. He can't hunt here since he lives in AL unless he buys the +$300 Non res TN deer license. So I'll just shoot them for him and let him have the meat.

Be sure to read up on the new rules about transporting deer into Alabama. The wardens have been watching closely and stopping hunters crossing the state line and writing big tickets. I think they enacted the new laws because of the wasting disease that are decimating deer herds in other states. Some guys were bringing back just the cape/horns and got busted recently coming from further north back into Alabama. You should call one of these guys and ask about it. Around here deer are so thick that we have certain plants that are now endangered. Here in my county it would appear you can harvest 5 deer per season. There are counties where 10 are allowed.

That's enough to put a dent in the beef sold.

This story takes place last year

The one guy I do let hunt my property called me a month before rifle season started, he was scouting out a lower section of my property. Calls me and asks if I had given anyone else permission to hunt on my land. I tell him no and ask why. He says theres a tree stand and game cam down there. All setup.
<snip>
Game cams make good targets.

I think the penalties for poachers should be stiffer......they should have sent these people to jail. I hunt and teach Hunter's Ed.........these poachers are thieves and very unethical people......they should be severely punished.

I agree. So many of these cases the punishment ends up being a slap on the wrist. Certainly not enough to deter this kind of behavior.

I worked with a guy who got caught poaching in Oklahoma. Lost his truck, gun , boots, etc.. and spend a week in jail. He certainly got the message but fining someone who has money a few thousand dollars for poaching a buffalo in a national park is really not much of a punishment IMO.
