Tresspassing Slob Hunters, Part II

/ Tresspassing Slob Hunters, Part II #101
Talked to my neighbor behind me (good guy, we watch out for each other) yesterday, he informed me that it seemed that the new neighbors I talked to before deer season came in, we're likely on my ground earlier in the week. I had to work, so I wasn't out, to be disturbed, or to catch them. I have no proof they crossed the line, nor does my good neighbor... but regardless, no reason for the hooting and hollering or general chaos my friend heard from his side of the holler.

We have plans to clearly mark our lines after season goes out, when we won't care how much we disturb the wildlife by riding atvs along the lines.

This story takes place last year

The one guy I do let hunt my property called me a month before rifle season started, he was scouting out a lower section of my property. Calls me and asks if I had given anyone else permission to hunt on my land. I tell him no and ask why. He says theres a tree stand and game cam down there. All setup.

I give my neighbor a call and ask if he knows anything about it. He gives me a non-answer and says he will check into it. I tell him I might just take it down and haul it back to the house. Whoever it is can come talk to me if they want their stuff back.

So the next day I decide to take a walk down (took thick to drive anything there) and take a look. Yup theres exactly what I was told was down there. The stand has no ladder or means to get to the platform there, must have taken it with them AND its cable locked to the tree. 20' up. The game cam is also cable locked to the tree. The only times I've seen such a setup is on public land. Theres no chance I can take it down easily. Id need at least a 20' ladder and some bolt cutters to get the stand down. Then Id have to haul it by hand to an accessible section. At this point I am not interested in that.

I call my neighbor back and tell him its all locked to the tree. Ask again if he knows anything about it. He says that it MIGHT be a guy he gave permission too a little bit ago but he's not sure. So I ask him to find out and have the guy take it down if it is. Its over 50y onto my property and the property marker down there is a stone wall, so not an easily missed division. He said sure he'd try and get a hold of the guy.

Two weeks later I give him a call back and ask if he's heard anything from the guy. He says no. I tell him that it needs to happen and the guy needs to come take it down or I am going to trek down there was a chainsaw and cut the tree down because im not hauling a ladder and cutters down there. My neighbor gets mad at me and says its prob just a mistake.

A week later I hear nothing. I call my neighbor back and he says yes its the guy whom he gave permission to and that this guy is "really busy". I say to him he's your guy and your responsibility. Neighbor says that this guy will be out this week to take it down. I say great.

I call the guy I gave permission to hunt there back finally, 3 weeks later, and say he should be clear to do whatever he needs down there. He goes down and puts a tree stand about 10' from the property line facing into my property. That was the weekend before rifle opens up on that Monday.

Monday night I get a call from my hunter saying at first light the neighbor came walking over all huffy given him the 10th degree about hunting there. I tell him id give the neighbor a call and see what the prob is.

I call the neighbor and he's mad, telling me that this mystery guy he gave permission to hunt his property just made a mistake and I was being a dick (there were some curse words thrown in there from my neighbor). I say I didn't give his guy permission to hunt on my land nor did his guy ever make the effort to come ask, and it wasn't like my neighbor made it an easy thing either with all the "shrouded in mystery" BS going on.

I haven't really talked to that neighbor since. Which is a shame. I don't like having tensions with neighbors.

What I think happened is that the previous owners of this property rarely made it out of the house, let alone checked on things like that so my neighbor and his family have been hunting there for years. I give permission to someone else to hunt there and it got fur ruffled. I cant see any other reason my neighbor would be mad enough to curse me out otherwise.

Ive now hung some "no trespassing" signs around the property. Ive talked with most of my other neighbors about it.

We have 92 acres of what many would consider a true slice of heaven. Deer, turkey, bear, and all of God's smaller creatures. I don't hunt. My lawn care guy is late 20 something with a new wife, and they literally live on what he hunts. He is the only person I allow to hunt on my property. He is allowed 3 deer per year, or 4 if he needs to fill his freezer. He took his second today, and is always extremely grateful and thankful. He is one of the hardest working men I have ever met, and super nice and polite. I believe the deer population needs to be thinned, and he needs to eat. It is a win / win for both of us.

I have a friend who's former military, out on a combat disability. I asked him how many deer could he and his family use and he said "About seven!". Ok I said, that's how many we'll get this year. He can't hunt here since he lives in AL unless he buys the +$300 Non res TN deer license. So I'll just shoot them for him and let him have the meat.

We got skunked this morning due to high winds. Maybe I'll get one tomorrow AM.

Just think, people helping other people... that could go somewhere...

The lesson here may be to tell anyone you talk to about this issue, that you have game cameras set up to find out who is trespassing. Might make someone less likely to continue trying to take advantage of the property owner. But that's probably wishful thinking......

Just heard a good one.

A property owner in RI got called an ******* for riding a dirt bike on his own property, ruining the hunt of someone hunting illegally on his posted property....

I think that this is actually pretty common. People trespass for years, then when they are told to stop, they feel like something rightfully theirs has been taken away. Kinda like sneaking into the country, living here for years then being mad when you are deported

I'm pretty sure that's why the TSHs next door are pissed; they can no longer trespass with impunity like they did before. Too bad, screw'em!

Mate, you need to invest in (what we Aussies call) a Bull Bar; bull bar - Google Search

Also known as a Roo Bar. They are very common over here... even on cars.

Back in college, another student decided he needed one on his car for some reason... he was very proud that he protected his grill, until one day when traffic stopped suddenly in front of him, which caused the car in front to drop in front, raise in back slightly, same thing with the student, which caused the very large back bumper on a full size car to be just above the bumper on the student, who ended up smashing his bar into the grill, pushing the grill into the radiator, pushing it all into the fan... Humbled that jerk in a hurry... still remember laughing hard (after making sure he was ok).

I think the personal attention I gave to my trespassers has slowed their activity. I heard some shooting last weekend, but not sure it was on my property or not since I did not go investigate, but certainly not close to the house like before.
