Trimming around chain link fence

/ Trimming around chain link fence #11
I just had this conversation with my son around the dog fence last week (wire, not chain link).

Filling up the spool at "2.5 arms length" for each cutting twine in the string trimmer, he (my son) will go use two complete spools to complete the fence line. This past Saturday doing the work myself, only using "2 arms length" for each cutting twine in the string trimmer, I only used one complete spool and had cutting twine left over after I did the fence line.

Lower RPM's when in contact with the fence, and higher RPM's just "touching" (not in actual contact) with the fence line is the trick IMO.

You will not get every piece of tall grass, but after mowing for a month with the grass growing around the fence, it looks 10 times better after use with the string trimmer IMO.

Our dog lot is 60'x40'.

 That's what I do, too. Just barely above an idle. Works great.

Here’s my solution, I have 3/4 acres in the dog run, I have 4 of my own and foster others. I run a 2 X 8 long the bottom of the fence with holes drilled for the posts. Then all it takes is to set the deck on the top of the wood, and mow. No trimming needed except in the very corner of the inside corners, and then it’s against wood not metal. If you can, raise your chainlink a few inches and run one or two strands of barbless wire in the gap between the chainlink and ground. Otherwise, roundup is the only choice.

That's a pretty slick solution. Do the boards stay flat and not warp?

I have a Stihl cordless trimmer. Only one speed BOH.

I lined our dog run with a small patio block. Then I squirt the cracks now & then with roundup.

The oldest section is now 14 years old, and I had 1 board that I replaced that warped. The weight of the fence seems to keep them from warping up, and to keep them in line where they butt against each other I cut a 12 to 15 inch piece, dig a little dirt out and deck screw both ends to it. Keeps them lined up real well.

Hi all,

I have been using a weed trimmer around my chain link fence.
Needless to say its a big pain in my butt. It chews through line
like no tomorrow.

Wondering if any of you folks have figured out a better solution?

Thanks
Dave

Ground Clear + water + sprayer = no need to trim fence line.

Saves a lot of trimming. Ground Clear will keep grass out for about the length of one season. Apply yearly.
