Trouble after rolling

   / Trouble after rolling #11
I've never rolled one so I can't speak from experience. BUT it's known throughout the farming community if a tractor is rolled, the first thing you should do before cranking it is remove the injectors and turn that engine over a few times to blow all the oil off the top of the cylinders. Diesels run such high compression it can crack rings or break a piston if the injectors aren't removed.

Hope you got by lucky on this one and sorry it happened.

That may have happened on one cylinder. It could explain the white smoke. OffBalance, does it feel like all cylinders are firing?

Ouch. Yes, it feels like all the cylinders are firing, but it is definitely still smoking - mostly when cold, but whenever RPMs or load are added. I let it sit overnight after I righted it, but I wish I had thought to pull the injectors before cranking.

The first time my Satoh was rolled, the injectors were not pulled and damage was done. Engine had to be rebuilt. The second time, the injectors were pulled. When the engine was spun over it shot oil up all over the side of the house. So if you ever need to do this be careful where you point those injector holes. You might want to do a compression test.

There just has to be a story or two behind that statement /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
How about telling us or pointing to a thread if you already posted.

I rolled a Beaver III years ago. I got the thing back up on its wheels pulled the steering wheel up out of the seat so I could get back on the seat, fired it up and it smoked like a coal fired locomotive, drove it to the house and it finally cleared up and was ok. I was lucky that I was not hurt and I did not ruin my engine.

Ditto,
What Junkman said, but I would definetly use a mixture of baking soda & water. That will neutralize the acid!

This by itself is a great argument for those sealed batteries like the Optima!

BTW,
The white smoke also appears when you first start a brand new motor for the first time. Then it is because it has a bunch of motor assembly lube to burn off. Be patient, it will clear.

Well, I ended up hosing it off in the field, since the hose was able to reach. Then when I got to the garage, I used the pressure washer and a soap solution. Then the next day I was able to sneak some baking soda out of the kitchen and used the pressure washer soap setting to spray a soda mixture on, let it set for 8 hours, and used high pressure to wash it off. It should be OK now. I realized that the acid had seeped into the dashboard, so I popped off the steering wheel and did the soda and rinse inside there as well.

All is back to normal EXCEPT for the smoke. Since I did hear clunking when first cranking, but now runs smoothly but with smoke, I am going to assume I popped a ring. I don't know how many rings on each piston, but I ordered the service manual (now available on CD!!!). I am trying to locate a compression tester that has the correct adapter, and high enough PSI. None of the local autoparts stores have one. Any ideas on a source? I will also ask at the NH dealer when I pick up the service manual, hopefully Friday. Say, when I was searching on the internet for a compression tester, I also saw advertised a boroscope that will fit through the injector hole. Has anyone ever tried one before?

If the compression is OK, I won't worry and will wait to see if the smoke disipates. Otherwise, I will have to start making the big decisions - fix it myself, have the dealer fix it, make an insurance claim, eat it myself, etc.

You left out one other alternative. Ask the dealer to check out the engine and let the service department decide what the problem is. You might just squeak by with having it repaired under the terms of the warranty. It is worth a try.......
