But you have the big ditch and you can be proud of that :D .

Done by union laborers and still not fixed right yet. This has to be the biggest white elephant this country has ever seen. Talk about cost overuns. Someone should have been hung out to dry for this boondoggle of a project.

Yup you saved your job because of the unions. Good for you that they did the right thing. I lost my last job because of the unions. I was a supervisor at a manufacturing plant and wrote a guy up for not working. One of his fellow union workers backed him up.

I had almost the same experience. Irritate Union member, they punish you big time.

Unlikely, Strong DEM state. Don't expect any hassles. Sort of like the disaster known as Fannie Mae. They lost lot's of $$$$ (like ENRON) yet no one ever talks about it.

Don't get me wrong, I am not a fan of Unions, but I cannot hold them responsible for the failure of the big ditch. Individual union members are just like anyone else, they want to do a good job, but quite often are kept from doing the right thing for many reasons. Like all of us.

Jim,
I am sorry that you lost your job. I can only speak of my experience. I will tell you that I have never ever ever ever seen a manager disciplined because of a grievance at least in the area I work in. To make this an almost short story. I was fired over an FMLA issue. I went to my boss and asked for some time off which he verbally aproved. I put in the paperwork and left. He disaproved the paperwork without telling me. When I did not show up for work the next day I was fired for being AWOL. During the period before this happened my doctor had called and talked to the boss about my taking time off and the boss agreed. When we got to arbitration the boss was asked if he had talked to the doctor and agreed to give me the time off. He said no he had never talked to my doctor. One of the reasons I won was because we produced my medical records where the doctor had made notes about talking with my boss and my boss agreeing to the time off. That particular boss lied under oath at the arbitration. Nothing was ever done to him about that. I was very lucky because I owned my home outright and had no car payments, house payments etc. If I would have had bills I could have lost everything I owned while we were fighting over getting my job back.

I wished I could punish someone for irritating me. The only thing is that about half of the time I am as mad at the union member I am representing as I am at the manager I am talking with.

Unions had their time and place. That was almost a hundred years ago. Now the only thing most unions do is force companies to go outside for their work. Just my opinion.

There are going to be people who read these posts who do not realize that when you do electrical work that you have to have a licensed electrician sign off on the job you did or the insurance company can cancel your insurance and you can have issues with code violations.

I completely wired my own house and a licensed electrician never set foot on the property. I got a permit, and had it inspected and signed off by the building inspector. His services were free, once I paid for the permit.

I did the same as Curly for my house. And I did the same as that for the plumbing. And everything else.
