1*I'm leaning toward a 7,000 lb car hauler type trailer;
But A little more truck than a 1/2 ton as I want to be able to haul 2 to 4 thousand pounds in the bed of the truck an I'm not sure a 1/2 would be up to that.
Also would prefer a tilt bed trailer.
2-3*Agreed if the money jump was to very much more it would not be worth it just to maybe haul a smal build occasionally.
4*What you said makes much sense to me.
5* Is that 16' long with a 2 foot dove tail?
Thanks for the reply.

I regulary put 2000 lbs in the bed of my 1/2 ton 4wd Silverado. When I say regularly, I mean probably 10 or 12 times a year. This is either hauling a ton or 2 (two trips) of gravel/sand for a small project or lumber for a project.

My trailer is a total length of 18'. It is 16' flat + a 2' dovetail. I've only pulled it about a hundred miles. About 60 of that empty and the other 40 carrying a disassembled car port.

The dump bed conversion is a good question, one I've thought about a lot.

Option one, purchase a beater dump and swap out the body, probably the easiest option.

Option two, I don't think it would be overly difficult to make it dump. First, I'd hinge, with pins the mounting point at the back of the truck.

Second, I'd need to rig up a piston and linkage to push up to dump, I bet I could copy one from a photo. Trick would be how to power the piston, my first thought would be off of my plow set up. Or I could run 12V hydraulic motor like 12v dumps do.

Would be a fun project and I bet there are guys on this site who've done it.

I would take the easy way out and find a truck with a blown up motor or the like and pull a dump body off and weld / bolt onto my chasis.

If you can weld, the dump body does not have to be in perfect shape to fix up and use, I understand steel is getting cheaper every day.

This is a project I'd really like to take on this summer if I can get the pieces to come together.

As for unloading stone or the like from the old GMC, shovel and back, shovel and back.

How hard would it be to convert a manual tilt to a
hydraulic tilt?

My thought has been to mount a bottle jack on the tongue in between brackets, one on the toungue and one on the bed of the trailer. Then I could use the bottle jack to manually tilt the trailer, would need fairly decent lifting travel, but that was my initial thought.

The trailer is very heavy and my Kioti is just heavy enough to tillt the trailer when loading. My brother's 1/2 truck, backed up onto the ramps could not tilt the trailer.

These are all fun projects though.

They have the kits in "Northern Tool" with a load capacity of 4000lbs.

I think they are around $1,300

That's tough to beat, parting together you could probably easily spend that.

Just found this picture of a good example of a dump piston mounted directly to dump body, no linkage, looks simple enough.

*This is my reason for a Hyd. tilt.
Also if you have a load of dirt toward the front you can't back the dirt up to tilt the trailer like you can a tractor car or truck.
It the trailer was tilted it would be easier to unload it ( dirt ) off the back with this equipment.

If I have to shovel it off I hain't puttin it on.:D

LB,

I use to sell "rich black top soil" that i get from the river bank behind my house.

The people that wanted it would bring a pickup, (trailer that doesn't dump) and i would load it for them, but when they got home they had to shovel it out.

Some would make two or three trips a day and shovel it out each load, and some was small women.

Some would bring 1 ton dumps.
