Alright two different methods of sharpening. I use the MAXX which seems to be a bit better in quality than the Oregon 511. The video here is not mine so forgive the music and terrible spelling in it. I flip the head on mine to the opposite 60 degree to sharpen the teeth in the same direction. The main thing is to not grind so much the tooth gets red. Just tap it and get the tooth sharp. The next method is one of those "Hey hold my beer and watch this type of methods.

I have heard that you have to be careful with a electric sharpener, you can take the temper out of the chain.

I upgraded to one of these. It was $30 when I got mine.

I had one of those. Lost it in my shop fire. Never replaced it. Worked fine. Just too time consuming. Once I understood the concepts involved in filing I could control the file by hand accurately and didn't need the guide any longer.

I can sharpen by hand but I feel that I get a near perfect job with the jig. It takes a little to get the jig setup but once it is setup it is faster filing. I think it is faster than sharpening by hand especially in a saw with a bigger chain.

Yep, Roger, very well could be. I keep several extra chains and tend to do my sharpening as a group event, doing all the dull ones at the same time. Makes for a Soul relaxing afternoon in a warm shop on a cold snowy day such as this one.

I don't like doing more than one at a time. It becomes tedious for me.

Well I picked it up last night. Hopefully I can put it together one night this week and give it a try this weekend. I'll let you know how it goes.

Congrads on your new sharpener, operated right a good hand sharpened chain and a good machine sharpened chain will cut REAL close to each other with maybe a slight edge to the hand sharpening like a 1/4 second difference in a 15 second cut. Some on here sure get a big head when they hand sharpen a chain.. A couple of things on a sharpener, make sure you get the wheel low enough so the side of the wheel hits the face of the tooth, make sure the gullet has some hook angle which it will when you get the wheel low enough, keep the rakers at the proper hieght as they need to be taken down afrter a few sharpenings. Don't grind off too much just touch the face of the tooth unless rocked out bad then you have to remove the damage, hard to believe anyone can get a rocked out tooth back to good shape with 3 swipes of a file. Steve

I totally understand your statement. But you wore me out with all your descriptions of what needs to be done correctly to make the machine sharpen the chain properly. In a second I go thru all those processes with the file. A sharpener just wears me out. I can sharpen five chains in the time it takes to sharpen two chains with a machine. I'm certainly not knocking a machine. I'm just saying hand filing is so much more time efficient. I carry a file in my tractor toolbox. Hit a rock or something in the log and dull the chain and within three or four minutes I can have the chain sharp again, without even removing it, let alone jigging it in a machine sharpener, that by the way, is back in my shop.

I have to take my hat off to those of you that can do this. Impressive.

I considered myself too impatient and prefer a machine. But it sounds like that takes more time, not less, considering taking the chain off of the saw and putting it back on.
