Re: TuffTorq K46 / John Deere L110 Transmission Repair Guide with Pictures

I still haven't heard from Pam or Derrick at TT and I'm not knowledgeable of a way to tell my lawn to stop growing while I hash out this problem. So I guess I will just flip the housing, button up and hang the transaxle back in the tractor and hope. I can't seem to get much in the way of customer service out of this outfit. Wish me luck. It will be my third button up and fourth re-install into the tractor (first was just an oil change, no case split).

What a great thread! Thanks to all of the contributors both early and recent. I bought a used Husqvarna Rider 155 and found that the K46i in it only goes about 30 minutes on a hot day before it starts slipping. I'm going to drain the K46 and add the 5W50 synthetic that I picked up at the auto parts store to see if I can get through the last of the summer and delay the rebuild for a bit. When it is time for the rebuild, I'll be empowered by all of the great info you guys have included in this thread.

It has been several days since I was last on here discussing the repair of my Craftsman MTS 5500. For the record, do not count on the orientation of parts displayed in any of the many exploded parts diagrams on the Tuff Torq site. That fact was stated by Derrick during his returned phone call I received when about halfway through the cutting of my lawn. The third splitting of the case and rotation of the 'motor housing' (#36) to the narrow side up position did the trick. Throughout the two acre test the transport of the tractor, both on the flat and up all of the grades regularly cut, was at the same speed and with little or no variation in operating noise. Moral of the story is pull out your cellphone/camera and shoot a pic before pulling out parts because that one part can be in either direction depending on the specific K46xx being worked on. Also, spend the extra $130 and change the center case when replacing the cylinder block pump and the cylinder block motor so that all the machined surfaces are starting out fresh together. The 'upgrade' of the two magnets and the bracket, which comes with no instructions as to what it is or where it goes, is bolted in place using the upper right long bolt holding the center case in place. With the magnets strapped against the surface of the center case with the bracket, the proper position will be realized by simply pivoting the assembly on the bolt.

Good afternoon, all; just found this site and this is my first post. I have a Husqvarna LGT2554 riding mower that is 4 years old this month. I use it to cut 5 acres around my home, but in this South Texas drought, I haven't had to cut very many times in the previous 4 years; it only has 93 hours. However, it's started lagging and loosing speed, and will come to a stop attempting to climb a slight incline. I really thought that the belt was slipping until I started doing a little research. I've copied and printed LotsofGrass's instructions and pictures and will attempt the repair myself. If anyone has another possible diagnosis, I'd appreciate reading it prior to tearing this thing down. I'll do that tomorrow and order parts on Monday. Again, glad to be here and a great big thanks to LotsOfGrass.

Hi Clev
My Countax is exhibiting identical symptoms, but it is 16 years old.. yours is at less than 100hrs, so were I you I would be wanting to have a word with whoever sold it to me, if that is possible, and tell them to sort it...

Thanks, jerry. I bought it from Lowes and will be in touch with their main office tomorrow. Also, unless I missed it, I haven't read exactly what caused this problem. Could you, or another member, post what causes these transaxle to loose power?

Well, I have it totally torn down. The oil is so clean that it looks like it just came out of the bottle. The gears and filter are spotless; there's a little black crud on the magnets. I've inspected everything and can find no damage, no chipped teeth, no scarring or scoring, no broken or bent springs. What am I supposed to find that causes this transaxle to loose speed and power?

No scars on the center case faces? Can you post some close up pics of the faces please? At least go back together with good synthetic oil.

Hi Kyle. No scars that I could see. And I have put it all back together; no pics. I am using synthetic but only have Rotella 5w40 and Royal Purple 75-140, both synthetic. I'll mix a pint of the RP with the Rotella; that should be close enough to 5w50, so that it shouldn't matter. I'm still going to call TUFFTORQ tomorrow before I finalize and install the axle; maybe I'm just not seeing what I'm supposed to.

I wouldn't put the thick RP in it. If you live down south in SM Texas, you might get by with 20-50 synthetic since we don't usually use the mower down here in the winter.
