Chains Turfs with Chains

I guess turfs with more tread on the ground keep more links of the chains in contact with the ground too. I know on R1 tires most of the links are not being pressed into contact.

I will have to look around for some chains then. Any good places come to mind? Im sure this discussion is common so a search is in order too.

I have an 1100 with 4wd and a 5' plow blade that also has chains for all 4 wheels. I will only be using chains in the rear from what I read the fronts need some slip.

I tried out my 1000 2wd with turfs in the snow today. I have a FEL and also a heavy duty 6' rear blade and it just spun on a gravel drive that I cleaned with another tractor. I need the diff lock to get it up a small incline to get it back into the garage. Has anyone had experience with adding chains to these type of turfs? From what I understand chains can be rather expensive and I want to make sure this type of tire (wide and round) could benefit.

I have a 1620 that is 4WD and has turf tires on it. I needed to use it in the woods on occasion in the winter and even in 4wd it would not go up some of the slight hills. Same issue if it was muddy.

I found a set of heavy duty ladder chains on EBAY for under $80 (what a deal). Neither the seller nor I knew what they were really off of but they looked too big for a semi truck and not quite tractor size either. I searched EBAY for "tire chains" and not tractor tire chains. It took a few weeks to stumble on the set but it was better than spending the $300+ for a new set. They were the right width and I just I had to cut the length down a foot. The cross chains are every 4th link on the side and the links are pretty big, like 3/8" thick. So the ride on pavement is pretty bumpy. But in the snow and mud it is basically unstoppable. I sometimes don't even have to use the 4wd.

Previously the turf tires were just floating on the snow and would not dig down to firm footing. And when they would lose traction just a bit it was "game over" as they would spin and polish the underlying surface. I was pretty disappointed in my turf tires as I use to use a friends 1710 with Ag tires and it went everywhere with no troubles. But it did tear up my lawn and that's why i wanted the turf tires. I thought that the 4wd would make it better in the snow and ice, but it didn't.

I had to flip the turf tires around to get clearance between the chain and fender well as the rim had just enough offset in it. Otherwise the turf's were to close to the fender to accomodate chains.
