Tying knots

One of the simplest knots for attaching a line to a post, stob or any open ended anything...is a clove hitch...
So simple an end is not required...make a right over left loop...make another and lay the first loop over the second then both loops over the post/piling etc...wallah...
see the link below...

I have a pair of boots that uses the "boa laces". Amazing system for quick removal/tightening of boots with simple knobs! Other than that I have a cheat guide that came with a new coil of rope. I think knots have become a dying art with the advent of ratchet straps and such.

Been said before but in the world of sailboat racing it is said that " if you can 't tie a good knot, tie a lot of them ".

If you don't know how to tie the right knot, tie lots of 'em! -credit to my Navy officer friend.

ARRRGGGHHHH! :irked: I knew that someone would 'trigger' me with that line... and I've smacked a LOT of junior Sailors upside the head for doing just that!

The proper knot for the proper job: bowline, clove hitch, reef knot, sheet bend (when required) and 'round turn & two half-hitches' are the common ones that I use. I get to teach these knots to the 'youth of today' with the local Navy Cadets, too.

Basically, all knots are a combination of a 'bend' and/or a 'half hitch'. It's not that hard.

Other than lace-tying, throwing a bowline on something that can hang, or an alpine butterfly for placing a tie-off--I find the midshipman's hitch to be the swiss army knot. Just an extra twist around a clove hitch.

Nice to be able to twist on a slide and grip knot one-handed while balancing a heavy load if you need to.

Practice knots in the dark to master them--so you can identify and manipulate them if you get stuck in it.

Used to race big yachts and the double half hitch was favoured a lot but we were always told to tie with the loose end coming from the left so if we had to untie one in the dark we would all know which way it was attached, I think in hindsight the instructor was half cut most of the time and couldn't see the knot in broad daylight but it is a valid point.

Yep, used to know more knots than I use now. Ratchet straps are so convenient. There is also a way to use knots in a rope to tie a load down where the rope acts as a pulley to tighten the rope even more.

Bowline, timber hitch, and truckers knot are about all I know..

:laughing::laughing: Thats funny
Funny to you perhaps...not so much to Citydude I'm guessing. Although Chris Rock once posed the question about why divorce was so expensive...his answer was "because it's worth it".

I was just reading a thread on ratchet straps and the subject of knots came up. Just curious how many people use knots or can tie any. I myself use knots daily rigging blocks/materials as a power lineman. My favorites include a bowline, square knot and the timber hitch. There are many more we tie on a daily basis but these can cover most basics. I was just curious what everyone else out there does.
Oh yeah the old timber hitch to tag out them rear lot transformers while raising and lowering them, I don't know that I have ever used it for much of anything else though, bowline, half hitch, clove hitch, etc, pretty much every day.

I hate the knife knot.
You know. The kind of knot you screw with for a half an hour trying to untie then cut it in frustration and desperation!

Square, bowline, Figure eight, shoe lace, slip knot, fishing hook and trucker.

If you really want to learn some knots, The Ashley Book of Knots - Wikipedia. A total of 3,800 knots!:shocked::shocked:

I heard about that book long ago. Do you have it? Just looked it up online $85 for the hardback but wondering how instructional it truly is... says 3900 knots and 7000 illustrations. That is less than two pics per knot. I'm a slow learner. :D. Obviously a comprehensive book. Thanks for jogging my memory.

The greatest thing about fishing is that even if you don't catch a fish, you've still wasted a day.....
There were many a day in my youth I would carefully ensure I had no bait or hook on my line, just a chunk of split shot to keep the line in the water. Why mess up a beautiful day with cleaning fish. Yet still at a distance looking like I was doing something useful like trying to get food :)

My most frequently tied knot would be the Shoelace knot, my longest tied knot the wedding knot.

Yes and no.:laughing::laughing::laughing: I downloaded a pdf of the book years ago after a quick search. Did not realize the book was still in copyright so I deleted the PDF. From my quick look, it was like most knot books and had decent drawings on how to tie the knot. From other books on knots I have, sometimes the drawings are easy to follow and sometimes not. :D I think Ashley's book was similar.
