Underpowered 3130 back from dealer....

I have 30 hours in three months on my L3130 with 723 loader. About half of that is box blade work and half loader work backfilling my new house and moving gravel.

It digs and lifts a heaping full bucket of wet clay or gravel and carries it up a steep incline with no complaints if the throttle is sufficient (usually I keep it around 2000-2200 rpms for carrying a full bucket). Breakout force has been my biggest disappointment, but I've improved my operation skills to better deal with that. I'm ignorant enough about this type of equipment that I do not know whether the breakout deficiency is due to lack of tractor horsepower, hydraulics or loader capabilities (if anyone knows, please tell).

Dragging a full box of moist dirt, no problems. I haven't pulled the scarifiers yet as we haven't had any dry weather since I bought the thing!

Troubles I have had are mostly traction related, indicating I have more power than I can use at times. Even with loaded r1 tires, differential lock and 4-wheel drive I am frequently spinning out my tires.

I was underwhelmed at first impression digging into piles of clay with or without the toothbar, stalling it out occasionally. For context though, the Bob Cat skid steer I rented had great difficulty getting into the piles of clay as well, and was relatively easy to stall making the attempt. I also have found the more I operate it, the more work and efficiency I can nurse out of it, so I think part of it for me is the learning curve.

Maybe after another 100 hours and some dry weather, I can better evaluate its capabilities. Of course, I would need some hours on the competitive models to say with any certainty that one was an underachiever.

p.s. I have never had the seat kill switch shut me down. Until you mentioned it, I had forgotten there was one on the tractor. Next time I operate it I'm going to see if I can get it to shut down to see if it is even operating correctly.

( I don't like the safety switch and would remove it if it were my tractor )

/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif After just reading your comments on drilling a couple holes in the ROPS for wiring lights, I can't believe you just wrote that. Removing a safety switch WON'T void a warranty or remove Kubota from all liability /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Seriously though, that switch is a pain in the butt...
I have to leave my tractor outside during the winter and I flip the seat forward (I always do anyway). Any kind of snow or ice build up under the seat that I don't get completely cleared and I don't have enough a** to keep the tractor running.

Ramon, unless you've severed all ties with your dealer, why don't you trade the tractor in on one with more hp or a lighter machine? No sense going on and on about it. Nothing is without limitations.

ramon49 -
Ive asked you this before but you didnt answer me.

Is this the first tractor you've owned, personally?

If not, please list the other tractor(s) that you've owned. It would be nice to offer some comparisions to what you've owned before to the L3130 you have now.

The B2400 develops 18hp at the pto with a weight ratio that's consideralby lower making the B2400 far superior, all things considered.

Ramon49,

This may be the root of your problem. If you want to race to the top of the mountain with a bare tractor, the smaller tractor will likely get there first.

If you want get some work done along the way, the L3130 will work circles around the B2400. At least I think it will. I do know my B2910 will put my BX2200 to shame when it comes to grunt work. But the BX will run faster up hill on its own than the B will, when both are naked.

Sounds to me like you "bought a Jeep and expect Viper performance." I can't help but wonder if even a larger L series like the L5030 would satisfy your wants. I don't mean to sound negative, but expectations are expectatioins and sometimes they just can't be satisfied.

In my case, I don't expect my BX and B to be the same. So I am satisfied when my B wants to go slower up slopes, especially when I am dragging a box blade or landscape rake or something behind be in the up direction!

Like most others, I would advise you to get rid of it and not buy anything new until you can test it on terrain like you are dealing with.

IF your state has sales tax and is like ours, if you trade in on a new tractor you may avoid sales tax on part of the new purchase, equal to the trade in value of the tractor. This can take some of the pain away...if you would buy something different.

Personally I can't think of anything I would like worse than being stuck for years with a tractor I disliked...hummm...on second though, I guess I can...but let's not go there... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Ken, I think you addressed a lot of questions with those pictures. Perhaps operator technique is also an issue. I know I cannot go into a pile of dirt and heap my bucket as fast as I could with a CAT backhoe I rented to remove some bamboo, but it wasn't as though the speed was so slow I wanted to get out and load it by hand, not even a thought. Anyway, I still have this feeling that Ramon49 now has a HST issue. If not that, then high expections that a 24 HP PTO tractor just isn't going to fill. I wish him good luck . I would hate to see someone spend that much money to be this disappointed. A good dealer it would seem would really want to work with him.

( OK! here goes: tractor will not go up an incline at various times, mainly during turns when the newly designed power steering is pulling on HST. Babying the tractor in low gear and creeping along at a dismal .1 mph is pathetic. The exhaust pipe blows black fumes and soot all over the FEL and gets inside the cab. )

I don't notice the steering making any difference at at unless at idle and cranking the wheel. I can drive mine up a 20% slope pulling 4000+ pounds of dirt plus what the trailer, box blade and loader weighs in medium without any problem at about 2200+ rpm. I'm in the woods for that so I'm only going about 3.5 mph and it would pull faster. On level dirt I'm running 5+ mph and doesn't know its there. Could go faster but the kidneys probably would give out.

I can pull the 65" Woods box blade with the rippers down full of dirt at ~3mph. Without the rippers I use meduim and pulls 4+mph.

I'm pulling a 6' finish mower up a 10% slope at 4.5 - 5mph.

The tractor is not overabundant on power but works just fine.
Either something wrong or your techniquie is horrable...sorry.

Probably won't help but here is one observation. When I got mine I couldn't pull my 20% driveway with the treadle mashed in low range without bogging the engine and belching black smoke. That was at full throttle. That's with filled tires and the BH 90 hanging out back.

I was advised by someone that Hess diesel had a good cetane rating and low sulfur and have since been putting that in. Keep in mind with 15 hours this thing is just now breaking in. I noticed Saturday it seemed to have more power. I can now pull the same grade with full treadle in low at as little as 2000 RPM with no complaints. Couldn't do that at 2700 RPM when it was delivered. Now the breakin may have a little to do with that but I'm wondering if these new CARB (think that's the acronym) engines are real fuel sensitive?? Something sure has changed and rather noticably. Seat of my pants tells me it found a good 10% power increase after I put the second 5 gallons in. Maybe one of the dealers can comment to this??

My L3130 GST has less than 10 hours on it, I have been a little afraid to really see what it would do until this afternoon. It pushed up a pecan tree that was leaning over due to a storm. I had cut the top out and left the truck at about 9' with a second forked truck about 3', the trucks were10 - 12" in diameter. I got on the side of the truck that was leaning over and pushed it upright then laid it over in the opposite direction . Then moved to one side then the other and it was rooted up. I pushed it into the nearby woods. Unlike the L3400 which will pick up the back end of the tractor when it's more than the bucket can lift the L3130 will just quit lifting. The tractor is stronger and better than thought it would be. I have a Markham toothbar which we installed 3 days ago. This is the first time I had a chance to use it and I like it.
