Using a horizontal-vertical log splitter

Did you consider the cheaper "Huskee" splitters sold at Tractor Supply?
Yes, I did look at those. I just felt better with the Brave Products splitter. I'm only planning on buying one splitter to last a life time and this splitter has a good record (other then a recall in 2007 for some bad hydro cylinders  ).
Once I start working it I'll post a review.

Has anybody used/does anybody own one of the Troy Bilt splitters available at Lowe's? (I know, Troy Bilt is now owned by MTD which makes alot of crap!).

Lowe's has a Troy Bilt splitter that can be used both horizontal or verticle. 33 ton splitting force with a Honda 270cc (9 hp?) GX engine. It looks somewhat well made and costs around $2100 I think. 12 second cycle time I believe.

Lowe's also sells a smaller Troy Bilt splitter for about $1600 (27 ton, B&S 5.5 hp, also horizontal/verticle combo.) I'm kind of guessing from memory on the smaller sized one's specs!

I've got a Troy Bilt 27 ton w/Honda engine. (160cc) I got it at Lowes. Paid $1389. I'm pleased with it. In fact, I just walked in the house after spending the day using it. It cycles fast enough to keep pace with me over a long day.

I was looking for a splitter 3 years ago to run off my tractor. I did not like any of the 3 point models I saw so I built my own. Here are my thoughts.

I did not like most 3 point units because they went right to left across the back. That only left one side of the splitter open to work from so I made mine to stick out the back. We usually split with 2 guys, one running it and one bringing over the logs.

I wanted the wedge to be on the ram and put the foot on the beam. I welded 3/8" steel cleats and have never had a log slip off. I also made a plate that can be inserted instead of the wedge so I can use it as a shop press. Real handy.

I wanted horizontal and vertical ability.

Here are some pics. I have about $425 in it and did all the fab work myself, tacked it up, ect. All the welding that if it broke I could get hurt I left to a professional welder. Cost me a case of Bud Light.
