Guess I'm overly cautious after spending $17k on a new tractor.

I spent $35K on mine and I am not worried about the sulfur content. As far as I know everywhere in the USA can only use ULSD inside the boundaries of the country. Anyone selling high sulfur diesel could be fined or jailed or both. I think shipping is still exempt which included railroad engines at one time but I don't know if that is still the case. All the refineries have been making nothing but LSD and ULSD fuels since early 1990. California got a jump and required it in 1985 or 1986, I worked on a upgrade project in California at that time and an upgrade project in Texas in 1990 so I know since then nothing made has been high sulfur.

I don't know where one would find it even if they were allowed to buy it. Government stockpiles of high sulfur should be gone by now and even if they still had it, it would be going to ship terminals only for use in marine offshore applications.

I don't know why they exempted railroads and ships on using high sulfur because the exhaust gases still go into the atmosphere and those guys burn a lot of fuel, likely as much or more than all domestic diesel users combined.

Sulfur will void the warranty and damage a new diesel.

Ok. Next question if dyed diesel is low sulfur and then there's Ultra low sulfur. How much sulfur is too much for damage to new diesel tier 4 engines?

Here go Gary, don't know how true it is, but it sounds about right (emphasis mine):

"Ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel was proposed by EPA as a new standard for the sulfur content in on-road diesel fuel sold in the United States since October 15, 2006, except for rural Alaska which transferred in 2010. California has required it since September 1, 2006. This new regulation applies to all diesel fuel, diesel fuel additives and distillate fuels blended with diesel for on-road use, such as kerosene, however, it does not yet apply to railroad locomotives, marine, or off road uses. Since December 1, 2010, all highway diesel fuel have been ULSD. Non-road diesel engine fuel was required to move to 500 ppm sulfur in 2007, and further to ULSD in 2010. Railroad locomotive and marine diesel fuel also moved to 500 ppm sulfur in 2007, and will change to ULSD in 2012. There are exemptions for small refiners of non-road, locomotive and marine diesel fuel that allow for 500 ppm diesel to remain in the system until 2014. After December 1, 2014 all highway, non-road, locomotive and marine diesel fuel produced and imported will be ULSD."

I found an article put out by Dept of Ecology - WA state.

Low sulphur diesel - 500 PPM(parts per million) or less of sulphur

ULSD - 15 PPM or less of sulphur

My 2009 Kubota M6040 is listed to operate on either Low sulphur or ULSD fuel.

All the owners manual says is - operation using any other type of fuel can cause damage to the engine and will void the warrantee.

With this in mind - I would guess that, FOR MY ENGINE, anything over 500 PPM could cause damage.

With your new tractor - you should have been given a small booklet - " Federal and California emission control systems, Limited Warranty for non-road engines(ci)" Within this booklet it should detail the type fuel to use in your Tier 4 engine.

15PPM is the limit for ULSD.
At this point, any offroad fuel should be dyed ULSD. Ask your supplier if its ULSD.

I just want to make sure the dyed diesel I'm getting is 15ppm sulfur. The supplier and even the JD dealer can't tell me what it is. This is a large supplier "LYKINS energy". Corporate may know but the local distributor it's just dyed farm diesel. JD dealer said it may just smoke some more? Haven't been able to really get a straight answer from either. So I guess I'll rely on TBN that's it's ALL ULSD. I don't want to mess up a new tier 4 engine and as my wife calls it a $17k lawnmower
