To you and me this thing is huge. It powers the whole dam and our office, total personnel is maybe 50+ people, computers lights AC heat Monster electric needs of the Hydro dam. Its just not setup to sell back the way i understand it. The dam was built in the early 50's hardly in the green age. They just replaced the analoge gages on the maingenerators like 4 yrs ago and have been overhaouling the generators one each year for the first time.

Our heat for our building is a boiler system that uses electric elements to heat the water, talk about efficient, but again our power is free to us.

There are about a million better uses for recycled oil than to be used as another lubricant. I am sure you could run Valvoline NexGen at the manufacturers specified interval and have the engine last forever, but the thought of using used engine oil for lubrication again seems silly. That oil could be used in so many other ways that do not require lubrication that it just isn't solving anything by being in engine oil.

The reason they recycle it back as engine oil is because that is what it is. In order to change it to a different product they would have to add hydrogen to it . All oil is made up of hydrogen and carbon atoms and by adding or taking away atoms, it can be made into lots of different materials. Sludge and by products of the refineries are routinely dumped back into the system and proceessed just as raw crude is, and believe me, they put stuff in there that would make used motor oil look like distilled water in comparison. I think the main reason that recycled oils are not going to be much if any cheaper is the transportion costs to get it from local pick up points to the user. I cant see that the end product would be any different from using "virgin" crude. Virgin crude has lots of impurities that have to be removed like sulfur by the tons in most oils. Very little crude is sulfur free. Just look at what the cost of filtered and bottled water is and no one complains about paying $1.50 for a liter of filtered water yet everyone rails about the cost of gasoline at $4.00 a gallon. Look at the cost involved in getting that gallon of oil vs getting a gallon of water and bottling it in a cheap plastic bottle which is made from oil. NO one is ranting against CocaCola for their excessive profits from sale of Aquafina bottled water that sells for as much as soda and cost virtually nothing to make other than bottle and transport.

I'm not an environmentalist, but if I see 2 products that cost the same and perform the same and one is recycled, I'll buy it. If it costs substantially more, then I might reconsider. Here is a perfect opportunity for those who don't want us to import stuff to speak up. I'll bet that many who wouldn't use recycled oil are the same ones who say we should be buying "made in USA". Imports are imports, aren't they?

From a technical standpoint, if the oil is really re-refined, then it should actually be better than new CONVENTIONAL oil. Can't really do much about the general lubricity, but as far as thickening due to temperature goes, getting rid of more wax is a good thing.

I think if the co. wanted to really push the product, they could take a 1-2% profit hit, and sell it a nickle or dime cheaper, and i bet that would actually start to move it.. it would not only get the green peiople.. but the price shoppers.

Im with you.- A 10% savings at consumer is a good pallpark. They are milking this and people buying it at full new oil price are enabling them for greater profit. If they cant use it for engine oil at a savings let them find another way to use it at a savings. A fuel extender/supplement should be easy. Make it clean and add it to diesel.

yep.. a price advantage will get more than 1 crowd looking at it.

not only the green, but the bargain hunters, and the people who have no choice but to get a cheaper than top lable; oil.. etc. that equates to more sales, and long term profit, AND it is gree.

win-win for everybody..

Northland is an oil brand in the upper Midwest that is primarily recycled oil. It is commonly found at farmer's Co-ops and such outlets. It has always had a solid reputation over the years. I get a darn good price on the brand of oil I use now, or else I would consider using Northland.

I sold many gallons of recycled motor oil at $1.00 a gallon when I worked for White's auto stores. It was canned, most stations had the glass jars available. It was pretty good stuff, of course there were no 400hp v-8's involved, nor private diesels.Prestone Coolant was$1.25 a gallon too, sold it by the trailer loads. BTW. many trucking companys bought filter units and burned their engine oil with the fuel in the semis and hvy equipment.
