valvoline recycled oil

Of course we didn't have to stab the top of the can with a screwdriver in the service station, we had genuine spouts that penetrated the metal top at least 9 out of 10 times without collapsing the cardboard.

I've got one of the old bottles with a spout. Don't know what type of oil was sold in it though.

When I was in high school, (1960s) "re-refined" motor oil came in standard weights (20-30-40) It came in 2 gallon cans. Don't remember the price, but was good enough to run an old car or farm pickup.

As high school boys go, we had a reputation for getting exceptionally high millage out of used recapped tires also...........

Anything to save money so we had more to spend on girls and beer..

Yep saw it i think its called somethig green or so and is in a partly green jug! Advance has it on an oil change special either last month or this month. Crazy thing is that it was say 17.99 (just a made up price, i cant really remember) for the regular oil 5 qts and purolator filter and then the same price for the recycled oil. I dont care how good it is refined i will buy the virgin every time.

i hear ya. i like the concept of re-use.. but if they managed to do it at ANY price drop.. they would likely sell more.. just from a marketing perspective. heck.. even 50 cents cheaper they would make more sales on it.. etc.

There is big money in recycled oil. I have a friend who deals in oils and the company he works for picks it up all the time. I think they pay about $.75 or a little more per gallon. I change lots of oil, maybe 100 oil changes or more per year and he would not bother with me. I though maybe I could get a tank and store it for a year or so and they could come pick it up. While my 150 gallons or so of used oil to me seemed like a lot they want to pick up 1000's of gallons, not a few hundred. I just take it back to my favorite auto parts stores.

Re cycled motor oil is not like it was years ago.. back then it was filtered, centrifuged and new additives added.

Today it is re-cracked in a refinery, just as crude is, to produce what is escentially NEW oil.

The Department of Defense has a requirement that all oil they buy be at least 50% recycled. I have not seen oil related failures in the DOD vehicle fleets.

I have a case of the old quarts and a spout. All in fairly good shape. Think they're worth anything???

I didn't know about the DOD requirement, nor do I know about the process. But way back in the 50s and before, there was both detergent and non-detergent motor oils. The non-detergent oil worked OK in the old cars, but when hydraulic lifters were put in cars, they needed the detergent motor oil or the lifters would start sticking. In other words, certain additives. The Texas Star re-refined motor oil we sold was a non-detergent oil back then.

For example, Texaco branded oil was non-detergent while their Havoline oil was detergent. Amalie motor oil did a lot of advertising and I saw a few engines torn down when the mechanics said it was nothing except using that darned Amalie motor oil that ruined them. Now Amalie made a detergent oil, but most people didn't know that the regular Amalie was non-detergent.

I would expect that the re-refined oil has the proper additives in this day and age, but I haven't seen any to see what the API ratings are.
