Not in ALL cases.

Plus what idiot has not heard how addictive these meds are?
I was prescribed them 15 years ago, and took them for one day, and decided they were not for me, and have not let a doc prescribe them for me since.

People who has a brain needs to know how to use it!

During the summer television drought my wife introduced me to a series ("Justified") that ran 2010-2015. Obvious that the market for opioids was alive and well in 2010 as were the methods used to distribute them.

Addiction and depression go hand in hand. EVERY addict eventually wants to stop! But their mind is having a difficult time getting back to normal. They all need help. None of them need or deserve belittling from uncaring, opinionated people.

Giving them compassion and respect may be just what they need to see the light and break the addiction.
I have a son in his late 20's that is an addict. Not opioids, but another drug. Wife and I are both in counseling to learn how to deal with him with a counselor who specializes with families of addicts.

Kid refuses to work. Just stays high all the time. Wants a free ride. Currently homeless, broke, and yelling and screaming at everyone in the family to give him money. He needs help for this, he needs help for that. Its everybody else's fault that he's in this situation. He hasn't worked in over 2 years and his wife left him a year ago and supporting him for a year prior to that when he decided he didn't need to work anymore. And dealing with a bunch of verbal abuse when she told him he needed to get a damb job. That's not counting the yelling and calling us a piece of ***** or worse, after we fill up his tank on his truck. Because we didn't give him cash.

And the worst part, his drug of choice is pot with a side order of booze. And he's a mean drunk.l. Absolutely refuses to take responsibility for himself. All he wants to do is get high and play video games. I could keep going since there's a bunch more that he's done to us, his soon to be ex wife, and the rest of the family over the past year.

The point I'm trying to make, is we had to cut him off completely. He asks for help, we inform him the only thing we will help him with, is we will pay for in-patient rehab and counseling when he's ready. Your not getting anything else from us.

It's hard to have compassion, even when it's your own kid, after you've dealt with being verbally abused for over a year because you won't support them or their habits.

I think you just described the definition of "tuff love". Stick with it, sometimes it works. If it doesn't work, at least you will have a clear conscience at the funeral knowing you did everything you could to bring him back.

That was a great show...They did a good job getting 6 full seasons out of a 35 page short story ('Fire in the Hole') by Elmore Leonard...

He also wrote a short novel based on the TV show after the fact...'Raylan'

My favorite character was Tim...his sarcasm was over the top...!

Man do I know this story well... My brother dealt with this with his two boys and now my cousin is dealing with it with his daughter.. It isn't easy.. My brothers two boys are gone now and my cousin's daughter is headed in that direction, very sad, good luck to you..

Definitely not enough tough love administered. Some accept help, but most can't help it and just sheit on you.

Problem is, if pot and ethanol are his drugs of choice, he could still be the same 40 years from now.

The issue isn't my conscience. Its picking my wife up afterwards. He won't call me and ask. He calls his mom.

Last time I talked to him and he tried to justify his dope use, I called him out on it. He said it was for pain. I called BS. I told him he did it because he liked it. Same when we booted him out after he quit high school due to his drug use and refusing to get a job Then told him he was refusing to work or fend for himself because his vaginitis was flared up. I told him I would be more then happy to buy him some tampons :D The conversation went down hill from there
