The day after I replied to this post, I thought well everyone's laughing at me now for caring about someone else's pet, but after loosing mine and still not convinced it wasn't killed it hits close to home. The road dip sounds good with a warning sign ahead. Someone mentioned getting another pet right away, and also to me. I know it's not an insult, but inside I say "you just don't know how hard it is". It takes time, and he can never be replaced like a broken pencil. Time, alot of time..

I, for one, wonder how folks as irresponsible and seemingly dishonest as this neighbor's daughter can continue to get drivers' licenses. I am in health care and am compassionate about most things, but there comes a point where no matter what one's disabilities might be, he/she must undertake some responsibility for actions taken. If the account of events is correct, can there be any doubt she hit the dog and then fled the scene? A 145 pound dog would be like hitting a person and if she cannot determine whether she hit that or not, she need not be driving. It is just a matter of time and circumstance before something else happens. Either way she has some explaining to do. If she does not truly know, she needs a driving competency test. If she does she exhibits insight to the point of lying to avoid repercussions. It sounds as though her parents are trying to protect her, which is fine, but I would not be done with this matter until evidence is seen. Although I know it is a loss, the thing that really burns me is the denial. We all, me especially, make mistakes. Bad things happen, but when someone is dishonest about his/her involvement, that person, no matter who they are needs at least some accountability. To me, such actions are pretty low on the list of human behaviors.

John,

A very prominent businessman that lives in the smae area that this happened has a son whos about the same age with extreme learning disorders.

The Dad owns a huge business, is high up in a profesional sports organization and politically connected.

His son received his drivers license without taking a test or even going to the DMV. Not even for his picture!!! That was all taken care of. LOL

He's so bad that they have Onstar in his truck for when he gets lost. If he takes a wrong turn from home to work, or is more than a few minutes late for work, they have to search for him.

I've personally witness his dad receive phone calls from him crying that he's lost and wants his mom. This was almost a weekly event, but sometimes it goes a full month when he's fine. You just never know.

I asked his brother once how they handled his insurance and what type of liability they had to carry for him to be on the road. He rolled his eyes and said I wouldn't believe how much it cost.

It's a sad situation that you have to experince and see what the family goes through. For them, it's extremely important that he has some level on independance. He will live at home his entire life. He will never marry, have kids or do anything on his own. Driving is his lifes accomplishment.

Sooner or later, this kid is going to kill someone.

I just find it asbsolutely wrong that the parents can buy their son driving priveledges when he is so disabled.

We don't know who he will hurt or kill, but we know for sure it will happen some day. I hope the victims take the parents to the cleaners for being so irresponsible.

Eddie,

I agree with you and your assessment. Although I see people nearly daily with physical or mental handicaps in my practice, I still have an issue with this situation. If you or I, assumably strong minded people, hit, kill, or injure someone through our driving negligence, we are in trouble. To me, when someone assumes the responsibility of a DL, he/she assumes its risks and responsibilities as well. In this case, I feel that was not and apparently is not being done.
