Even if you get an original switch, you still need 12 volts on the wire going to the B+ terminal.

Did you ever say that you had 12v on the red wire to the B+ on the switch plug or switch itself. There is probably a fuse in that line also.

That wire comes directly from the battery. This voltage has to be there to start, run accessories, etc.

The OP has not yet found power to the switch, grounded to chassis or not. I've recently suggested he run a wire directly from the battery + to the switch incoming feed hot terminal, to see if he could get the starter spinning; but he has not yet done so.
Earlier in this saga I had him use the battery with jumper cables to energize the new starter/solenoid with the new, current battery, to verify the engine would turn over, the starter/solenoid were functioning, etc. This DID turn the engine, which verified the foregoing theory.

If there's no wire going into that ignition switch with a good 12v then you will continue banging your head. You have to have 12 volts going to the switch at one terminal. When you then turn the key to "crank" that 12 volts passes through the ignition switch to energize the coil on the solenoid (which is the small wire on the solenoid). When energized the solenoid "magnetically" moves a puck to pass voltage from the giant red wire into the actual windings of the starter to make it go vroom.

As mentioned before if you know which wire is supposed to have 12v constant power at the back of the switch make a jumper that can be easily removed for "bad things happening purposes" and make that wire have power to see if the crank circuit works as expected.

If it does you need to figure out why battery voltage isn't making that trip. You have an open in a wire, a fuse that's no good, or the wire isn't connected to power on the other end...

While reading the last few posts a thought occured to me. there are two posts on the solenoid. One side is connected to the battery via heavy gauge wire. The other post on the solenoid is connected to the starter via a copper mesh wire. The red wire that comes from the switch is on the starter side post, not the side that the battery is connected to. Is it possible that it needs to be in order to get power? ?? I might have not reconnected it correctly. There is also a third wire. The blue one that connects the two together when the switch is turned to start thus sending power to the starter.

Here is what I am tslking about. The left red wire runs up to the key switch.

I blame the forumrunner software if the is sideways.there are no options to rotate. :(

Haha. wow. Well looking at that wiring diagram for the first time.. the ign switch does pull power off the starter solenoid, when you turn the key to "s" it transfers that power back to the blue wire through the ign switch, which then energizes the starter solenoid. As far as I can tell...

well folks, i have a running stump grinder! i cannot believe i missed this so many times but it was the last few responses that triggered the fix. i remember when i first hooked this back up being not sure but it seemed like the right thing to do, but of course there was no way the switch was going to get power THROUGH the solenoid that way. thanks to all for your responses to help me through this and especially coyote for making so many suggestions and sticking it out!. a learning experience. so now that it's running i'll be changing the oil and filter and getting it all put back together and the first task will be to remove the monster maple stump in front of my barn. grind on.. :)

Good job BB. Glad you didn't give up and glad you got it going. Congrats make those stumps go away!
