Re: vinyl siding for a pole building

Can I ask you some more questions?
Are your OSB sheets nailed directly to the posts?
If so, did the wall end up relatively flat on the outside?
If so, where did the header board (which the trusses rest on) on the outside end up. Seems like without perlins, the header board would stick out beyond the OSB. Did it, and if so, did you just box it in such that is was above the soffits? Other pictures of some of this detail would be helpful, if you have any.

Re: vinyl siding for a pole building

When they built our pole barn they used horizontal wall girts and OSB on the exterior before they attached the siding. We then stacked 2X4s on end to the original girts on the inside to get the depth of the insulation that we wanted for our work area (5-1/2"). The OSB on the outside is fastened with nails, the OSB on the inside is fastened with deck screws. The inside skin can be removed and reinstalled very easily and takes a lot of abuse without actually showing it.

Re: vinyl siding for a pole building

Ah ha, now I see - typical pole barn construction. In your previous pic, the inside 2x4s were so well lined up with the perlins/girts, that I didn't notice them. Now it's all clear, but I still wonder about my idea of directly nailing the OSB to the poles, and then studding out the inside, like a normal wall.

Re: vinyl siding for a pole building

I really can't help you with that question. We had our shell built because we felt the job itself was a bit more than we might handle in the time frame that we alloted. We started it in late September and we wanted to get the shell finished before snow fell. The finish work could be done at any pace so that part didn't concern us and from that point forward we had the warmth of a salamander heater so we could work through the winter. I'm sure it could have been done cheaper, but we are satisfied and one only has to please themselves.

( What you don't understand is that a lot of times a siding is a owners preference. Not everyong likes metal walls for some reason or the other and some people like vinyl because they can match their house with it. There is nothing wrong with using vinyl on a pole barn if it is done correctly and while it may not be common in your area it might be in others. )

I musta said my point wrong. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Oops.

I certainly understand folks liking different textures for their wall coverings, and vinyl is great stuff. I didn't mean to knock it, if I sounded that way.

Here in southern Minnesota where big sheds are nice & snow loads are heavy, you can build a stick-wall building or a pole-wall building, both are common.

The stick-wall building will almost always have vertical 2x lumber to attach siding to your building.

The pole-wall building will almost always have horizontal 2x lumber to attach siding to your building.

When designing the building, before building or buying anything, it's probably a good iddea to figure out what you want for siding, and then pick the type of building design that matches up with the type of siding you want.

If you want vinyl, and a fine choice it is, a stick-built building will make it much easier, and probably be an over-all cheaper building design.

If you want vertical metal or wood siding, a pole building will likely be an overall cheaper design.

Nothing wrong with any of those choices, but forcing horizontal siding on a pole building, or forcing vertical siding on a stick-built building adds to the overall cost & design. Not that there is anything wrong with _that_ either, it's not my money, and I've certainly done stranger things in my life....

Just wanted to mention that as a practical thing, plannig for the whole building first & matching up your exterior cover to the buiolding style will help save money. No big deal to me.

Hope that helps?

As a farmer, I need to count my nickels, I get nothing extra. Food production is shifting off shore from the USA, EPA & community restricions & insurance are costing a bundle, grain prices are going down, fuel, fertilizer, seed, iron keeps going up. I don't get any extra money to spend on miss-matched building designs. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

But, I didn't mean to suggest anyone should use one type of product or another. Just thought a little early planning would help out.

I'm not so sure the stick route would be cheeper.
Going the stick route means footers and a block foundation.
Concrete and block work is not cheep.
With a stick frame you also have to buy all those extra 2x4 vertical studs.
With my solution as I posted earlier you can use your choice of a, b , c , d or e for the vertical uprights.
a-1x2
b-1x3
c-1x4
d-2x2
e-2x4
A through D cost less than E but you could probably buy them (the two by fours) with the money you saved by not doing a cement foundation and still have money left over.

Right and hundred of nails sticking trough the walls isn't doing it correctly.

I think that would be an extermely flexable, weak side-wall. What will you be anchoring the vertical studs too? Will you be putting something across the top & bottom at least?

I know a guy that nailed 2x6s verticaly to the purloins inside the building and half way between the post.Said it was to strengthen the walls.
Don't see how it helped much as they weren't burried in the ground.
