Re: vinyl siding for a pole building

I just bent all the nails down against the backing so they wouldn't be sticking out and sure won't pull out.

My dad uses the nails from the vinyl siding to hang things on...

It's like having free pegboard! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Try the cordless Paslode stapler. You can use different size staples and adjust the height for siding

( Does anybody know how to install vinyl siding on a pole building without having the nails protruding through the OSB into the wall cavity? )

Just seems an odd combination. Pole buildings have horizontal framing, and work well with metal or wood that is applied vertically to the outside.

Stick built buildings have vertical framing, and work well with horizontal tin or vinyl or wood siding.

Combining a pole frame with OSB & vinal siding seems to really make a complicated & expensive building?

Only way to eliminate the nails is to set your 2x framing vertically, and always nail into it. But this makes a more expensive building frame. You could skip the OSB & much of the framing, and have good vertical tin for about the same overall price.

Anyhow where I live, that is how it is done.

Re: vinyl siding for a pole building

Yes, it may complicate things, but there are some reasons. Building codes for one. No foudation is needed and some codes are requiring a 42" deep one even for a stick built garage, but not a pole barn. Initial installation is quicker and cheaper, with einterior framing ectera coming later. I'm sure there are others.

Re: vinyl siding for a pole building

Beautiful job Mike. Now some more questions. Would you see any problems with:
- 4 x 6 poles placed 8' on center
- no perlins
- OSB ran horizontally, with the only support initially being the posts.
- Before vinyl installation, place 2x6 framing inside, except rather than how you did, run it like a stick-built wall, vertically.
- accomodate windows in the 2x6 framing and then cut OSB to coincide.
- vinyl side last

I realize the siding installation over the OSB installed in this manner may leave a less than flat wall since the posts become the joining points and nothing really spans them except for the siding. However, there is some siding nowadays that has a fiberglass rod directly adjacent to the nailing flange so something like that, coupled with loose nailing, might result in a fairly flat wall. What do you think?

Re: vinyl siding for a pole building

Thanks for the complement. We didn't build the shell of our barn as I have no experience in putting one up and I wouldn't want to steer you wrong with bad advice. There are others here more qualified to give you construction advice for the shell.

Once the shell of our barn was completed we then ran with the rest finishing process ourselves.

They did use 6 X 6 poles for our barn on 8' centers.
We went with 10' doors so we would never need to worry about little things like overhead clearance issues. We opted for a 12' ceiling. We would also highly recommend open center trusses. We put 3/4" plywood up and made a lot of storage overhead and took advantage of the normally wasted space. We cut in a access hole and used a hinged piece of plywood to cover the opening when not needed.

1 * Better way make vinyl siding 24 inches high instead of 10 inches high.
2 * Sure it does because you're paying to frame and side the walls twice.
3 * Wonder how many siding jobs the vinyl siding industry is loosing to this.

Re: vinyl siding for a pole building

I hate vinyl siding for a couple of reasons.

1. It collects moisture behind it.
2. A hail storm (especially after it is a few years old) will punch hundreds of holes in it.
3. Breaks easily after it is a few years old.

All plastics harden after a few years and become much more suspceptible to breakage and it is very difficult to replace one piece in the middle of a wall.

Here in East Texas a lot of folks have gone to metal siding and metal roofs. It seems to me that by the time you pay for OSB and vinyl siding you could get painted metal for about the same price. Put a couple of purlins between posts and screw the siding on.

May not be as pretty as vinyl siding but it seems more practical to me. Besides, a barn isn't supposed to look like a house. My tractor shed is covered and roofed with corrugated galvanized metal and looks like a tractor shed which is what I wanted it to look like.

Re: vinyl siding for a pole building

PineRidge (Mike), why did you install the interior studding horizontal instead of vertical? I'm missing something here! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Thanks, Stanley
