I believe that every right comes with an equal amount of responsibility. If we don't accept that responsibility, there are people who will use it as an excuse to curb our rights. Of all of the non-LEO members here who carry for self protection; how many have been through training for that, over and above the basic CC training? And of those who have, do you maintain it? Carrying for protection requires more than being able to hit the target.

I didnt, but Ive already been in a few situations that would make some people fertilize their fruit of the looms, I came through with flying colors.

That's the ultimate goal. Some people are just better handling situations than others... and there are things which can't be taught.
OTOH whenever we have a minor crisis such as what we are going through now, there is a run on firearms. Do people actually believe they are just going to bring them home and know how/when to use them?

That’s what FEAR does to people. Calm, reassuring leadership at the top has helped. I remember the first death estimate that came out of England of 2.2 MILLION US deaths freaked a lot of people out.

So mentally ill people and people with violent criminal historys should be able to own firearms? Splendid.

Here's just one example from just 1 year. 2018.

So all of those people, how many were prosecuted for lying on their background check form? That is part of the problem in my opinion. If you make it a crime to knowingly lie on the form, but then never prosecute anybody for it...

If Government was at least effective in doing what they set out to do, that would be a different matter. They are highly ineffective and the BIGGER the Government, the less effective it will be.
Too true.

I was just pondering the question that if I could snap my fingers and get rid of every firearm on the planet for ever, would I? I'm thinking probably YES.
Unless you had some way to erase the knowledge of guns, gunpowder, etc from the mind of every person on Earth and out of every book they wouldn't stay gone.
The first people who would have them back would be those who probably shouldn't have them in the first place.
The thing is, it's not a big deal for someone who has half an idea of what they're doing in a machine shop to make a gun. They talk about 3D printed guns but if you have a block of metal and the right template you can make yourself a gun.
Heck, you can make a single shot shotgun with parts you can pick up in the plumbing aisle at your favorite big box store.

1: Background checks are only as good as the system data, the system data is dreadfully poor, I'm sure they are out there but EVERY gun owner I know that has done a private sale, knows the buyer.
2: I agree, it's a stupid law.
3: It violates Due Process, our Legal system says you're innocent until proven guilty, and ERPOs violate that, if they had Due Process AND provably false accusations were prosecuted I'd be a lot more ok with them, but they don't, and they aren't.
4: What happens when you don't know your gun is stolen, I have a locked gun box in a rural location, it might be 6 months before I go to that place (especially during the current lockdowns), I'm a criminal because someone stole my stuff and I didn't notice immediately?
5a: Depends, I don't have kids so I have no issues keeping a loaded gun on the nightstand (I don't leave it there when I'm not at the house, I wear it). ALL my other guns are locked in a safe or a "RSC" (what some people call safes but are really just glorified "keep honest people honest" boxes). If I had kids, the nightstand gun would be in a quick access safe AND the kids would be taught to respect it.
5b: I don't know what VA passed regarding introducing kids to guns, but it's none of their business, that's between the parent and the child.
Agreed. See the case of that nut that the Air Force failed to mark as being ineligible to purchase firearms (as well as the others who received a less than honorable discharge and should have been flagged as not being allowed to purchase a firearm but weren't)...

...

Yes, it is pathetic.

Some states that do their own background checks are pretty aggressive about investigating when a flag is thrown on a background check. PA, Oregon, VA come up in many searches as states that investigate every denied sale.

However, it's important to recognize over 3,000,000 gun sales have been denied due to background checks since 1994. Some folks here think that's a travesty, while, and I have to correct my earlier incorrect 85% claim, 90% of people want universal background checks for ALL gun sales.

Here's a good read. Universal Background Checks | Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence

... 23:55 local time and some clown is popping off shots somewhere in the neighborhood ... likely with a semi-auto handgun.

Two cruisers on scene in less than 5 minutes.

This is out in the "country" ...

... and people wonder why a majority of the populace supports more restrictive gun laws ... SMDH ...

That also was before the country/world was shut down; we'll never know what would have happened if business as usual had continued.

“ 23:55 local time “ so what? Guns are used at all times. Could have been used in self defense. Might have saved a life of a person in danger. What is the right time to discharge a weapon? Short answer: when it’s needed. That could be anytime.
“ some clown “ why is he necessarily a clown? Again, could be lots of good reasons. I shot a rapid raccoon in my driveway last summer at about 5am before it got to one of my beloved pets  doesn’t make someone a clown.
“ likely with a semi-auto handgun “ what difference does that make? Would you feel better if he used a flintlock?
“ two cruisers on the scene in less than 5 minutes “ thats good police response time. Youre lucky.
“ this is out in the country “ a perplexing statement....are gun shots only heard down in the “ hood “? Guns aren’t a ghetto-only tool. We country folks have guns, too and for a lot of good reasons.
“ and people wonder why the majority of the populace supports more restrictive gun laws “ The reasons and rant you went on (see above) might be your reasons, but they sure aren’t mine. What if you find out on tomorrow’s town blog someone shot a rabid animal or a cop shot a deer hit by a car to euthanize it?

You mean like Sweden?

You probably should read the 4th amendment;
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

The second says Shall not be infringed, what do you think is next? If we let them walk over one they will be walking all over the rest real soon. People today are so pathetic and understand nothing !
