Been checking into what other choices are available if VW buys back my 2010 Jetta TDI. There are NO stick shift diesels other than VWs.
The only other cars that do 40 mpg or more with stick are the Scion or Mazda3. I rented a Mazda3 in Forida about 2 or 3 years ago. It got 43 mpg, with an auto.
Lots of choices for over 40 mpg if I can get my wife to go auto. The biggest mpg winners are the BMW 3 series diesel @ 45 mpg and the Cruze @ 46 mpg. Even the Benz E series 4 cylinder gets 42 mpg, but it'll cost us $53k. It's the direct replacement to our old 240D that we had for 25 years.
I find that we get EPA hwy mileage on average plus a little bit more in the type of driving we do every day.
Highway driving on the TDI produces 45 (in mountains) to 49 on flat interstates. No so with our sorry gas 2005 Tacoma. It's pushing too much wind with its humongous frontage.
