The California Air Resources Board said it had notified Volkswagen Group of America to recall all VW, Audi and Porsche vehicles equipped with 3.0-liter diesel engines in the model years 2009-2015 that were sold in California.

"This action is the result of an admission by officials at Audi A.G., manufacturer of all the engines involved, that the vehicles contain three auxiliary emissions control devices," CARB said in a statement on its website.

"Audi, Porsche and VW all independently certified their products and, therefore, individually responsible for their violations and future recall actions," it said.

The so-called "defeat device" is software that turns on emissions controls when the vehicle is undergoing a government emissions test, then turns them off under normal operations, allowing illegal amounts of nitrogen oxide to spew into the air.

...Audi had told US regulators that three-liter diesel models since 2009 contain the auxiliary emissions control devices (AECD).

Volkswagen has been engulfed in scandal since September, when it admitted more than 11 million vehicles worldwide equipped with smaller 2.0-liter diesel engines had the pollution-spoofing software.

The scandal has widened, with the German automaker subsequently revealing that it had understated carbon dioxide emissions, including those for gasoline engines, for up to 800,000 vehicles.

Wasn't VW supposed to provide a detailed plan to the EPA on how they would repair/fix the smaller diesels by this time in November? I haven't seen any relevant headlines recently.

All we owners have gotten so far is an apology and the $1,000 offer thingie.

Think they're first trying to get some new diesel models to offer us. That's what I'd like: a really good trade-in on a new one.

"Spew" "admitted" and "engulfed" identify you as an EPA sympathizer and tree hugger. Those on the left coast do have a differing viewpoint, to which you are certainly entitled. I am so horrified that my Beetle gets better mileage and runs better in spite of the noxious efforts of the EPA. Goes further on a gallon than the EPA would prefer. I applaud VW on the results if not the methods. The "scandal" would simply be hilarious except for the financial damage to VW and their stockholders, the only party in fact harmed. I have not seen the detailed math, but I strongly suspect that the total pollution left behind for a year's driving in one of those scandalous VW diesels is LESS (because of the fewer gallons burned) than if they had been compliant with the most out of control bureacuracy in government next to the IRS, namely the EPA.

Here in California my wife's Subaru had an emissions related recall that I wasn't aware of. Then found that I couldn't renew the vehicle registration until I took care of the recall. I would imagine that VW owners may get a grace period but will eventually have to do the recall to keep the vehicle registered or to sell it.

I have several 1976 cars I can't get tags for because of issues with smog so they simply sit in the barn...
