Yes, we are fortunate. All of the police and fire departments are very good and responsive here.

I have a county police station within 1/2 mile of me. And a couple 7-11's within a mile (cops, coffee, donuts). There's a township fire station is about 1 mile away. A couple city fire stations within 3 miles.

Yep. Just 20 years of easy work.... Man, I'd hate to be an officer in my town. County wouldn't be as bad, but still they help in the city. Thinking about it, these are the police departments that I can expect to deal with if I call 911.

South Bend City Police
St. Joseph County Police
Indiana State Police
Pokagon Band of the Potawatomi Tribal Police
Indiana Conservation Officers

These and a couple other small town police departments at our property 6 miles away.

Forgot the airport police department just a half mile away as well.

I had to go for an ambulance ride once (norovirus from my dad's funeral). Wife called the ambulance. Airport police department showed up first, township fire department, county cops, city fire department ambulance. Lots of people to drag me out of my bathroom into the hallway to get me on the gurney. Thanked as many as I could.

Wow that is a hellavu pension with lifetime medical. I would hope most actually deserve it.

Oakland is very generous with Public Safety...

The old pension plan was even more generous and the last to start was 7 years ago.

The old plan pegged retirement at what the rank pays today... so every time officers get a raise the retirees pension increased...

Even a lawsuit because they wanted Overtime included in the calculation and survivor benefit...

Honest... there are retired OPD that earn in retirement 2.5 times the amount they earned working and at that time it was 100% city funded... now the officers have to contribute some.

The one with the 180k pension retired at 52 with 30 years service... he got bored... only so many new trucks and boats you can buy even if you have 15k coming in... so he went to work for the county at 130k starting to add to his 180k...

I tested for OPD, SLPD, County... the Chief of SLPD sat me down and said here is the problem... we need minority officers and women... we are so desperate that we recruit from Atlanta and Chicago and fly them out...

Unless you are female and/or minority the only way you can get hired is to pay your way through the academy and graduate at the top... then we can hire you.

The consent decree changed everything...

I just talked to one who retired on medical with 24 years in... he married and started a family.... he loved being Mr. Mom and invested in Income Property... he is 60 and his oldest is off to college next year with full scholarship... but who knows with Covid-19?

He is waiting out the storm at his vacation place with the family.

One person was very happy that I did not get into Law Enforcement... and that was my grandmother... as my uncle died in the line of duty as a deputy... she never recovered from that.

We're waiting out the storm literally tonight. Short band of heavy rain and decent lightning for about an hour. Moved away already.

In Washington State they are the Dept of Fish and Wildlife. Often these guys work alone and out in the boonies. Can be rewarding job but dangerous too. Friend of mine from high school went into that profession and loved it.

Very tense situation when encountering hunters. Over the last ten years or more our area has been flooded with city hunters that lease tracts of land. They have no idea where the boundaries are and don't care. They also think they purchased access to everything within reach. Leave pasture gates open. Cut holes thru fences. Kill Deer and cut off the head leaving the body. Even mistaking sheep and goats for Deer.

Generates a lot of well deserved revenue for the farmers feeding the wildlife but comes with a cost.

Here in Missouri they are called MDC (Missouri Department of Conservation) officers. Yes they have firearms, yes they have arrest powers for any state law NOT just fish and game laws. They don't focus on other things until the SHTF. They have other radios other than their own radio network equipment. Usually at least a county sheriff statewide radio.

You hear them when things get bad on the sheriff's frequencies. Manhunt for instance or dangerous fugitive fled to the country etc. I have run many license checks for them in the old days before there were terminals in cars and I was a Greene county dispatcher. Occasionally they will "jump" something really really "good" with checking licenses out in the boonies. One time they jumped a duo of criminal's wanted in another state. When I saw the "hit" on the terminal A high speed car chase ensued. I managed to vector in some Greene county deputy's to set up the road block and the collar was made. So "rabbit cops" are far more than "rabbit cops".

Yes they are. And I respect and support them just as any other LEO.

There are places in various states where they do NOT go alone, or even in pairs. They'll team up with 6 or 8 if they really need to go.

You're lucky. I called 911 once in my life the afternoon of December 4 last year and no one was available to help. We waited about 20 minutes for an ambulance.

Town is half a mile away, another is 7 miles west, another is 9 miles east. The ambulance was 18 miles away.

I've fortunately not had to call for an Ambulance. But, if I were 18 miles away I would expect 15-20 minute response time. I can see the Water Tower of the town that would respond to my current location and they have 24hr staff. It's 10 miles by road. I would expect 10-15 minute response time.
