In Indiana the are called Conservation Officers and they work for the Department of Natural Resources. They are law enforcement officers, they carry guns, and it's one of the more dangerous jobs in law enforcement, as bubba the poacher is usually armed, drinking, or on meth. Not only do they deal with wildlife related law, they help in K9, search and rescue, boating law enforcement, traffic enforcement, etc.... pretty much anything the state police, county police, or city police do in addition to wildlife law enforcement. They also conduct educational classes and other PR stuff. Generally, they are great folks. They keep an eye on my place when in the area. They once stopped my in-laws on my property. Asked them if they had permission to be there. They were cutting firewood. :)
In Washington State they are the Dept of Fish and Wildlife. Often these guys work alone and out in the boonies. Can be rewarding job but dangerous too. Friend of mine from high school went into that profession and loved it.

Thanks  but I'm a long way from a saint.
Luckily we live in a very rural area, most of the families know the other families or know someone that does.
On top of that when the girls would talk about some one when you lean back and ask if they are from this branch or that,
is so and so their father or uncle it slows some hanky panky down. And on top of that all my girls knew how to shot and some enjoyed shooting.
Then to top it off one of them had a scum bag start sniffing around, when that got over and done with and we had a nice little talk he decided to move.
Some times it helps to be at that time an in decent shape 240 pound gun toting Marine :dance1::drink:

I know a handful of Marines. One in particular is a one bat crazy son of a *****. He also boxed professionally. Not the kind of guy you want to piss off.

I thought about it in high school. That, or state police. I did some interviews and took some tests and found I didn't have the proper personality for law enforcement. Go figure. :confused3: ;) Anyhow, I went into electronics instead and that served me well.

Here in Missouri they are called MDC (Missouri Department of Conservation) officers. Yes they have firearms, yes they have arrest powers for any state law NOT just fish and game laws. They don't focus on other things until the SHTF. They have other radios other than their own radio network equipment. Usually at least a county sheriff statewide radio.

You hear them when things get bad on the sheriff's frequencies. Manhunt for instance or dangerous fugitive fled to the country etc. I have run many license checks for them in the old days before there were terminals in cars and I was a Greene county dispatcher. Occasionally they will "jump" something really really "good" with checking licenses out in the boonies. One time they jumped a duo of criminal's wanted in another state. When I saw the "hit" on the terminal A high speed car chase ensued. I managed to vector in some Greene county deputy's to set up the road block and the collar was made. So "rabbit cops" are far more than "rabbit cops".

Funny thing is there are something like 200 of them in Indiana. I've only been checked for fishing license twice in my life in Indiana. Once I was underage and didn't need a license. The other time, the guy came out to my ice hut, asked how I was doing, shot the bologna for a while, and left. He never asked to see my license. I bought a lifetime fishing license many years ago. I've yet to show it to anyone. :(

Seems quite the opposite in Michigan. I've been carded there more times than not.

Yep... 12 from my high school went into law enforcement right out of High School... they did the two year Admin of Justice at Merit community college or Chabot...

Though I would be smarter because a 4 year degree earned 4% more from date of hire.

In those two years the consent decree happen and that was that... the department did not mirror the community.

All my friends have long ago retired with lifetime medical and pensions 100k to 180k

In AK, Law Enforcement, Fire Department and Teachers can retire after just 20 years of service.

Yep. Just 20 years of easy work.... Man, I'd hate to be an officer in my town. County wouldn't be as bad, but still they help in the city. Thinking about it, these are the police departments that I can expect to deal with if I call 911.

South Bend City Police
St. Joseph County Police
Indiana State Police
Pokagon Band of the Potawatomi Tribal Police
Indiana Conservation Officers

These and a couple other small town police departments at our property 6 miles away.

You're lucky. I called 911 once in my life the afternoon of December 4 last year and no one was available to help. We waited about 20 minutes for an ambulance.

Town is half a mile away, another is 7 miles west, another is 9 miles east. The ambulance was 18 miles away.
