update.

IE 11 instaleld flawlessly as far as we can tell now that both of us are back from lunch to test his system out.

still not sure why the install/downlaod and run would not work.. but the downlaod and save as and then install worked fine.

I always save it then run.. That way I know where it is when I need to re-install.. Otherwise it ends up in some temporary file with a long encrypted alpha-numeric name that the enigma machine couldnt decipher :)

Ron, I never shut down this old Windows 7 desktop and the browser IS set to "Install new versions automatically" but it hasn't done it yet; still running IE10.

I can see I made one mistake when I ordered the new laptop. It's running 1.5 Ghz and I probably should have ordered the 2.0 GHz. Anyway, the new laptop is working OK, but it's slower than this old desktop.

Incidentally, the laptop is a 64 bit while the old Windows 7 desktop is a 32 bit machine.

Bird,
Create a system Restore point, just for safety sake.
Then go to the automatic update and choose update. Since you have have optional ones, you should get a list of all of them and what they do as you highlight them one by one.
At the left of each one, as I recall, there is a little check box. Check the one for IE-11 and then it will tell you one update has been selected for installing. Click on install and let her rip. It will take some time and you will probably have to give it permission along the way if you don't have your Administrator Account open or at least put in your administrator password.
Let us know if this works.
Ron

Bird,
Doesn't HP have a "turbo-boost" gimmick that will clock to 2.4 Ghz when needed, supposedly?
How much RAM do you have in the new laptop?
That HP laptop I had with the "black screen of death problem" was slow too. When I got it going again ( temporarily )
my wife wanted to use it. I took a little cover off the bottom and all the RAM slots were full so I went to Best Buy
and got 2 more at double the size each and took it up to maximum. Didn't cost much and it really improved the speed
since so much temporary stuff didn't have to go to the HD.
You might check that out on yours. If you send it back to HP for an upgrade you might not get the same unit back.
RAM is probably cheaper at a local store than sending the laptop back anyway, and they will probably stick it in for you if you take the laptop with you.
Just a suggestion, since I really am not familiar with what you have, just guessing:laughing:
