We had one open about 10 years ago near us and it is flourishing, even with HD and Lowe's not that far away. They carry the items that you can't get in a box store, have knowledgeable people to explain what you need and how to install/use it. The lumber is about the same price, but the quality is far superior. It is like comparing a nice sit down restaurant to McDonald's. McDonald's is fine for a quick stomach filler, but it isn't nearly as good as a freshly cooked meal in a good restaurant.

Your right Gemini, same here they go out of business.
And the newest news, another Lowes just moved in 17 miles from the other, and now right next door is gonna be a HD.
I guess we can walk to either one now.
A bit off subject, but after 25 plus years of Duncan Donuts, I went in to get 40 dollars of gift cards, and they wanted to see my license when I wanted to pay with a charge card.
Clearly this is against the Discover agreement with them. (they would
'have' your name address, and SS number)
Ill opost the response from DD headquarters when and if they respond to my letter.
I use my charge for everything. gas food etc everything. and have never been asked this.
Perhaps terrorist are going to got to DD?
All for 40 dollars, I bought a ride on for $1,200 dollars and they never even checked the signature.
Oh well, I guess thats why they call it a shopping experience..
Allan.

Our local lumber yards are merging to fight the BIG STORES. However, some day, they will be a BIG STORE, too. There are three local yards still here. One has gotten rotten, preferring to deal with contractors only. Another just bought my favorite single store yard out. They now have stores in about every county around us. Fortunately, the guy the owned the single store became a partner in the bigger yard and will still be around for years to come. And there is a third, small yard near me that is expensive, but always has really nice wood and friendly, helpful service. The office guy has good knowledge of new things, as well, so they have or can get the latest and greatest... if you want to pay for it. ;)

allan I believe they are actually required to check ID at most places before they accept your credit card. They do that to make sure that the person that is using the credit card is the person whose name is on the card. My bank has a program that for a one time 5.00 fee they will take your picture and put it on the face of your debit card from this bank. I love using it the store clerks have the ID they need and they dont have to ask for your drivers license or other ID. I did have a clerk in minnesota once who refused to accept that debit card because I had not signed the back. I pointed out that it had my picture on the front but she would not accept it without it being signed on the back. I just bought my 4 double A batteries somewhere else.

I did not sign my debit card- wrote "please ask for id", I am amazed how few clerks do! I was told by one store that if the card is not signed, and used by someone else the issuing company is off the hook, and I am on the hook. Strange???

As a credit card merchant, we are told that if a card isn't signed, then we don't have to accept it. If we do accept it, and it is disputed, then we are stuck for the money. I have also been told, but don't have any independent verification of this, but if you don't sign your card and it is lost and signed by someone else, that you might be responsible for the purchases the same as if you gave the card to a family member. I don't understand why people don't want to sign a card, because if you follow all the credit card rules, that you can't be held responsible for more than $50 of purchases. Many credit card issuers even waive this amount. Our policy is that we require identification and that the card be signed. If not, we don't accept it. Here is a site that tells about this Urban Myth. After you read it, you might sign your card.

It's funny you mention this. Yesterday I had a business owner taking me to lunch and he got into a big spat about his credit card when it came time to pay. He hadn't signed his credit card. They wouldn't accept it. The fight ensued. I ended up paying for the darn lunch just to get out of there! I don't know how the idea of not signing your credit card started, but it doesn't make any sense to me. I've had several merchants check my signature with the signature on the back of my credit card. Now, they can't read either , but they match.
