Watch the Eclipse

We will be in the totality zone. My wife ran out to the eye doctor and bought 5 pairs of eclispe glasses. You can order them on line. Consider them throw away glasses as they look like those 3d glasses you get at the movies. anyway, anybody wanting to view the eclispe is welcome to come and park in my field.

You can't spare the time to spell it out to make your communications clear, and I'm supposed to do the work for you? My time is valuable too.

Tractor forums aren't known to be socially progressive and hand holding is most likely frowned upon. :(

I hate it when some feel good week minded man wants to hold my hand. But it sounds like you are saying civility is frowned upon also? If so, things need to change.

Is clarity that big of a deal that being respectful to our tractor buddies is on the back burner?

How long does it take to type the words "local welding supply" and eliminate any confusion?

A guy told me I needed a number 14 welding glass to watch the sun. Really? I have a 9 and a 10, wouldn't a 9 be enough? I also have an auto-darkening helmet but when I looked at the sun with it today, it didn't darken. Are they all like that or is mine a real cheapo?

Mine darkens when you look right at the sun. the sensor/sensors must be perpendicular to the suns rays though.

Understood. In which case civility (in my mind) would encompass a question such as "what's LWS"?

Holding my acetylene welding goggles in front of my old welding helmet seems to be dark enough. My auto darkening helmet doesn't darken pointed at the sun. it seems to need a sudden flash to darken.

We are not in the path of total eclipse, but plan to watch anyway. The local library was giving out free glasses and they meet the specifications for safety.

Don't forget that a safer way to observe the eclipse is to make a pinhole device. Just punch a pinhole in a piece of paper and place it perpendicular to the sun and let the pinhole shine on another piece of paper. You will be observing the eclipse on the piece of paper with you back to the sun shining over your shoulder. Adjust the distance between the two pieces of paper for best focus. You can also adjust the pinhole size or make multiple pinholes. The larger they get the brighter they will get, so you might want some sunglasses for a large hole.

Be careful (what you wish for Bill)...the city of Clayton has no idea how many people will be in the area starting this week...I was advised by the local grocer to get stocked up by Wed. or face the traffic issues on 441... all the grocery stores are on the east side of the highway and even on minor holidays traffic is nuts....

Bill...you missed the chance...you could have rented out camp/tent sites for $$$...just had to advertise on the astrology type places...!

It must be a slow time for welding projects... this thread is just about all of the action going on, in the welding forum! Yeah I'm going to make the trek down to Corvallis, OR on Sunday night. Have a hotel! Hope the weather and the traffic is good! I am reliving my youth... made the trip to eastern WA back in Feb 1979. Need to find a tie dyed shirt!

This video brought back memories!

I went to four welding supply stores today before I found a #12 lens. I asked the guy if they were scarce for some reason and he said "the eclipse". The lenses are back ordered from the manufacturer because of the eclipse. Then he told me Oregon has called in the National Guard because they are expecting so much chaos! Don't know if this is true or not.

I don't think there are four welding supply stores in all of Eastern Washington. I don't see why there wouldn't be chaos, looting, civil disobedience - look what the sh*t for brains liberals, with too much government handouts, are doing in other parts of the country.

This will be seen by many as just an excuse to push their outlandish agendas.

Yikes! Another reminder of the hatred that is seething right below the surface. Maybe you haven't noticed the supremacists and Nazis that actually have been causing havoc and killing people lately.

Oh, I forgot, what's the point in even mentioning reality to the MAGA group? Let's return to our regularly scheduled programming while I roll my eyes in amazement.

I was told as a kid many years back not to stare at the sun, it will blind you. Still seems like good advice to follow! I will watch the eclipse on TV or youtube and let someone else buy the fancy lenses and filters to view. I would pick the fake or wrong ones for sure anyway. You guys be careful! :)

Im thinking of making one of those pin-hole projector. Or maybe like the one i saw a video on NASA on using a pair of binoculars. I remember, vaguely, doing the pin-hole thing in Goldendale. :)

I remember being stopped at traffic lights and having to look right at the sun to just barely see the traffic light. Apparently dark glasses were enough to keep me from going blind. I don't remember if the windshield was tinted. It scared me to look at the sun like that, but what are you going to do? I guess you could just wait until the cars behind start honking.

And yet here you are wasting some of that valuable time crying about it.
