2Lane; The Atomic Buffalo Turds sound WONDERFUL. I'll leave the ribs and seeds in the jalapenos though! If it isn't hot enough to break a sweat, it isn't worth eating! :licking:

The first year I made them and served them at our annual car club "ribfest". The folks gobbled them like grapes. My good friend Mr. Sanchez said they were too mild, so the second year I left the veins AND seeds in; Mr. Sanchez took the bulk of them home with him. :laughing:

The field peas and bread was really good. Put up four quart jars of the field peas and we have about a gallon to eat this week. TX Don would eat the peas... Well, maybe not, I did throw in some smoked pork loin and there was some EVOO used to cooked the onions, garlic, and celery. :laughing::laughing::laughing:

We have a bunch of left over food to eat this week. A bit of pork meat loaf, about a pound of smoked pork loin, the field pea soup, one loaf of whole wheat rye bread and 1/2 a loaf of whole wheat. :licking::licking::licking:

I have never heard of crowder peas before and I don't think I have seen them in the store but I will double check next time. Got's to ask the wifey if she has had or heard of them.

There is an old farm store we try to visit each spring for seeds and other stuff. They might have some crowders....

I kinda prefer the Purple Hull peas; we usually plant them later in the year, after the onions are all harvested. Small plot, but enough to last through New Years and satisfy those intermittent cravings during the year. Sometimes all it takes to make me happy is a couple of cold beers, a bowl of Purple Hull peas with a smidgen of bacon or ham, some Texas 10-15 onions, a little vinegar pepper sauce, a big slice of Sharn Jean's cornbread, and a big glass of buttermilk (Ok, so I was lying about the buttermilk).

There's also something theraputic about shelling/snapping Purple Hulls; it is very relaxing, and sometimes we will just sit on the patio shelling peas and enjoying the evening. Our little Boston will sit patiently waiting for the occasional, but inevitable errant fly-away pea that ends up on the patio; and when it happens, she will chase it down and gobble it up, returning then to her former position of vigilance.

Sorry to digress, but I'm reminded of a time when I was home by myself, and had just picked about 2 or 3 gallons of Purple Hulls and brought them into the kitchen. I looked out, and my Sister In Law came to the door, looking for Sharn Jean. I told her she had gone to run some errands and I was tending to the Purple Hulls. She said, "Well, let's shell them". I said, "Help yourself". She was dressed like for church, and I said "You sure you want to do this?" And she said, "Yes, I love shelling peas".

She was still shelling peas, hands all purple when Sharn Jean got home. Does this ring a bell with anyone else? Seems like a past-time that is all but "gone with the wind".

I found a Purple Hull Festivel in AR that looked like it might have been on a road we used to travel many years ago.

Purple Hulls are to me just a "kinder and gentler" Black Eyed Pea.

We can't get crowders around here, being from northeastern NC they are popular around there. My mom's family brought them from Alabama in the early 40's and they caught on there big time. Sometimes I can drive 30 miles south, just across the Virgina line and get them in T's Corner at the Food Lion. Otherwise my brother sends them to me from Elizabeth City.
I like the southern style corn bread mom makes, around here and in eastern NC they make that wet, sweet pasty crap.
I love mom's corn bread crumbled into a big old glass of buttermilk, eat it with a spoon, good as it gets!

It's also the way it's smoked too but I always like the jalapeño hot rings. Never get cold rings myself.

City Market in Luling has the most outstanding sausage but I don't have any pictures from there.

Is there a difference between crowder peas, black eyed peas and cowpeas or are they all the same thing by different names? I'd never heard of crowder peas but the photo in the link looks like black eyed peas and when I google crowder I get references to cowpeas. ????

Not even close, crowder's are different than black eyes, quite a bit. Some people confuse crowder's with field peas, but they are different as well. I don't know what cowpeas are.

They have really good field peas too.

One of our local Walmarts claims to stock Pictsweet crowder's but they don't ever have them and the sku # doesn't show up in their inventory. I have some small spots of ground in the back on a small ridge that has poor soil for most stuff, usually great for growing peas, I may plant some there just to see what happens. I hope the birds, rabbits and groundhogs enjoy them!:laughing:
