What is strange is my wife can smell the propane if it's low, but I can't.

Just the opposite with us. More than once my wife thought a burner on the stove lit but didn't. Luckily I was around and smelled it, because she didn't notice anything.
I wouldn't say propane smells like dead mouse, but the odorant does smell different these days than I remember it smelling years ago.
