Very pretty day here yesterday...for the first half of the day. This photo was taken about noon looking west from my porch. The snowcaps in the distance on the top left are about 50 air miles away.

At about 2 yesterday afternoon I happened to look out and saw this approaching....

Within a half hour all **** broke loose. Visibility zero, with wind so strong that the hail and snow plastered the side of the house even though there is a porch roof extending out 10 feet. 3 inches of snow in the next hour...but the worst part, the power flickered and then went out. It was 4 hours before it came back on.

Here in north idaho we had 18 of snow over night yesterday. Spent 8 hours on tractor relocating said snow. Expected more today. About 32 outside right now 20200112_083327.jpg

-48F this morning. 5 Mushers scratched from the Copper Basin 300 Sled Dog Race during the night. The -48 wouldn't be so bad but there was a breeze blowing too. Mother Nature can be Brutal.

Fair amount of rain and 46 here in Salem. WX is painting a couple days of subfreezing temps and possible snow accumulation on the valley floor in the next couple days. That will pretty much bring things to a halt here.

Grsthegreat, you're up around Coeur d'Alene aren't you? I follow my hometown paper on fb and Boundary county is getting it pretty good. Northern Lites power outage map covered a lot last time I looked

About a week ago we got 120cm (4 ft) of snow in 24 hrs and it kept coming. The power went out for 34 hrs and the phones were out for 4 or 5 days. It took me 2 long days to plow and blow a path down my 1 mile long driveway, wide enough to get the truck out but it didn't matter since our roads hadn't been plowed. The 3rd day I spent opening the driveway a bit more to get ready for the next round and making a path to my neighbors that were still snowed in. Also blew some paths for them, to get to some of the animal locations so they could carry water and food to them.

When the power goes out here we don't have running water (we're on a well) and no sewage capabilities since our septic is a pumped system. Since last night we got another foot or so and it's still coming down hard. This morning the winds came and the temps are plumetting. Supposed to get down to -34C for the next few days and I'm expecting another power outage any time.

I sure picked the right year to get a cab tractor and Trygg chains. If it weren't for those chains and my rear facing blower my neighbor and us would have been screwed.

Well here north of Montreal I got off lucky.
South reported 120 power outages.

There were all sorts of weather warnings for major rain and sleet and predictions of major power outages.
Well I got all of 1 inch of snow after a lot of rain but that's it.
Since my tractor was down I still had some 3-4 inches of snow from previous event and have an AWD car so OK.

Lights merely blinked but once and that is sum total other than lots of water, but hey, the car is clean!

On the positive side it was warm so I replaced my defective block heater and that proved to be a 3 hour chore due to it's location.
Darn heater is behind the oil filter and with the FEL framework it is a major task to work on.
I had to drill it and that required some serious trickery to accomplish, like a 24 inch drill bit (to clear obstructions etc) flex drill shaft to tighten the new heater in position etc.
when they use the term compact they sure mean it!

Yep, a fellow can take really cold temps, but add the wind and it's a whole different story.
