One of the things that had me the most hesitant about this project was how to get the head off and then back on again. Lots of wild ideas that were way to complicated and involved until I realized that my cherry picker would do the job.

I showed it when I took the head off, but it's such a great solution that I wanted to share it with you again. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I was actually able to position it and lower it onto one pin on the back of the block. Then I had to back up half a foot and was able to lower it onto the pin on the front of the dock.

The head is in place and torqued down.

The mechanics at Case looked the numbers up for me in thier books, along with the sequence.

The head is tightend three times from the middle out in a circle.

First time it's torqued to 46 ft pounds.

Second time is 110 ft pounds.

Third time it's torqued down to 148 ft pounds.

OK, so I didn't make the progress that I expected, but at least the head is on and now it's just a matter of putting all the parts back on.

Dont feel bad about the progress Eddie, your doing fine... I've had an Exporer torn down in my shop for a month or so...I already built the trans, bolted it up, had the heads rebuilt and have all the parts I need to finish it, but the weather has been good enough for me to build a shed for the bikes and mower, bush hog, and multiple other things that needed to be done outside(stillnot through).. So, the Explorer is still in peices and will remain so, untill I get a chance to get back to it /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif... Your doin just fine... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Did you ask the Case folks about the valve adjustments?? Once you set them, start the unit, run it in per Case instructions and probably then reset the valves once the engine is hot. Not sure if this has been covered or not, but you should seek Case's info on this. Bobg in VA

Bob,

They didn't say anything about running it and resetting them. Hmmm, this doesn't sound good. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

The told me intake is .012 and exhaust is .024, but that's all they said. I'll ask. THanks.

There are three positions where the pistons are at TDC. I was confused because I was thinking how to do this with gas engines. With a diesel, there is two TDC points for adjusting the valves. There is no spark, so that isn't important. All that matters is the piston is at the top of it's stroke to get the valves adjusted.

To make sure the piston was at the highest point, I put some assembly lube on a long screwdriver. You can see it in the pictures. The screwdriver is on the rocker arms. The white line is my mark.

I also used two sets of feelers guarges. One for intake, the other for exhaust. This made it simpe to keep track of the two different settings.
