After much research, I pulled the pin and bought a welder. Went with a Miller Big Blue 500. 500 amp at 100%, 12 KW 120/240 single phase, 20 KW three phase, 47 HP Perkins turbo diesel, and a 25 gallon fuel tank. The 20 KW three phase was important to me.
Waiting for it to come in now.

Ron

The welder part is probably more welder than I'll ever need, but at least I won't have to worry about duty cycle. The three phase power was critical in that I wanted to run a machine that was close to the limits of the welder. And, it will run the biggest plasma cutter. The machine will also be my emergency generator.
I suspect the machine will long outlive me.

Well, it finally came in. What a monster. Started it up and that Perkins purrs like a kitten. Impressive machine. I'm charging the battery for the digital camera. I'll post pictures tomorrow.

We just had one of those come through our shop for some warranty work. Sure is a beast. That Perkins is actually a Shibaura engine which is a very good, reliable engine. I guess Perkins and Shibaura are now the same company and CAT owns them all. Anyway, I wish I had one of those...I'm blue with envy.

That would be a little excessive.

I also bought a Hypertherm 1650 plasma cutter. I wired that up to Big Blue today and cut up some steel. I bought a one inch by three inch by twenty foot piece of ar400 steel to use as teeth on a dozer root rake. Once I got used to it the plasma cutter did a good job of cutting the steel. Only problem I had was that my little Hitachi portable compressor could not keep up. Naturally, my big compressor is up at my property in New Hampshire. What Lincoln does that I wish Miller did is put a full output three phase plug on the front panel. Miller requires you to hard wire to the three phase. I'm going to run a wire out to a plug once I get the machine set up.

Didn't get a chance to take pictures today.
