Welding Up a Cracked Rim

Welding a pressure that has corroded enough to leak? Ever heard tell of the military , aviation industry, state and Federal land and marine transportation laws. Then business and industry in general? How long would it take for you get fired for putting a defective pressure vessel back in service. Know anybody that is a paramedic, ER room staff, fireman or cop? Ever see the aftermath of a ruptured pressurized gas vessel. Ask them. If you were not blindly ignorant of the facts or so in love with money to cheap out on such a repair. You would Never consider maiming or killing somebody that has family and a litigation lawyer.

I also would like for you to tell us all about these laws.
Ever stood Fire Watch while a welder was down in a hole wekding a leak box on a natural gas line? The whole time the gas is on fire while he is welding.
Welders that do this say that as long as the fire is burning its ok.
Ever watch a welder weld a fitting on a pressurized line for a hot tap?
These things are done most everyday and done safely.
If you are scared say you are scared.

I am not a welder but I would not hesitate to weld that wheel

heck.. if I couldn't run any of my machines for fear of failure from a bad weld, for units that had weld repairs. I'd be down to like.. um.. NO tractors to drive. I think probably all mine got some 6011 or brass filelr rod SOMEWHERE on them.

he wait a minute. my nearly new and in-warranty NH 7610s came from the selling dealer with some WELD repairs. HMM.. :)

as someone else said... there's safety.. and then ther's fear paralysis

I deal with inspections on boilers and ressurized piping as a ASME inspector and after the final weld blending, we perfrom NDE, mostly dye penetrant in an effort to find cracks that are not clearly visible to the eye.
In this case I would certianly do a PT check before pressurizing it. A cheap method is to use some light machine oil, like a 5 weight or less, thoroghly soak the area as well as the HAZ adjacent to the weld, and let it soak in the oil for about 10-15 minutes after brushing it on. Then wipe off the excess oil with a clean rag, apply some alcohol to the rag but don't saturate it,then wipe the area again. give it five minutes to air dry, then sprinkle some talcum powder very lighly over the repair area.
The talcum powder will draw the oil out of any fine cracks and will be clearly visible to the eye after a few minutes,or if its bad enough, the powder will stick to the area with the indication.

Cheap but effective and will give ya peace of mind.

My God it's getting deep on this thread. Do we John Deere guys know how to have fun or what? You can't have this much fun on the Chinese tractor forum. What would a Chinese guy do if his rim had a crack in it anyway?

Widdle one,or have there family carry the load.

Actually I posted the NDE thread for all those that may have doubts or end up with a like repar sooner or later, what ya'll choose to do with your rims is really up to ya'll, it ain't like your blood or anything.

About 3 years ago I welded a rim for a friend. He drive the tractor to the local preschool one day for show and tell. Right in the middle of his demonstration that Dam rim failed and blew the **** out of 12 little kids. Faces were permanently damaged, arms and legs sat akimbo on those little bodies. It was the worst thing that I ever saw. To this day I wish I would have heat treated that rim or used a different rod or painted it with epoxy paint or used jb weld or put a tube in it or not put a tube in it. Something. Anything. I still hear those little pukes screaming and crying. Blood everywhere. Oh the carnage that I created. If only this topic had come up on TBN back then those little chitlins would all be hopscotching and playing like normal kids, not being the disfigured freaks they are today. Then again, nothing has been accomplished by this thread. Curse you MMH for ever starting it and bringing back these awful memories.

I don't believe you. Is there a news paper article to link to? Why were you at the school if your friend was taking his tractor there?

While the topic has took a wide and round about path.
Would it be safe to assume that if the rim is too rotten to fix then replace it. If the crack is a "one off" with a reasonable explanation, the rim should be safe and reliable for service if properly repaired.
As for welding a corroded and leaking air compressor accumulator vessel? I would assume most folk would rather replace the tank instead of risking a sudden rupture of 90+psi ? Sometimes it's just a hiss and other times it's a flying tank and shrapnel when they fail. Is it worth the risk to most people, probably not.
Has anybody here worked on 1700psi pressurized heat transport equipment containing 250C contaminated and tritiated coolant? Personal airlocks are another. Ever figure the tons force on the walls and doors with just 1/2 atmosphere of pressure?

Just because it is on the internet does not make it true.
