Like a lot of things, you try and try to fix or rebuild, but sometimes the only real answer is to just get new. I would have done the same things you've done and probably strung it out just as long.
I fought wells and pumps for years, but when the county ran the water line past the property and asked me where I wanted my meter, I told them that I was so glad to see the water line, they could put the meter any darned place they wanted. Over the past 26 years I've spent a lot of money on water bills, but my water has never run out, I haven't had any pumps go bad and I haven't been up all night fighting a pump problem so everyone would be able to take a shower the next morning.

Good luck on your new well

My apologies blackrat. Haven't been on here much lately. Restricter goes anywhere on the delivery side so that the pressure is maintained yet flow is restricted. Once again I apologize for the late reply.

Blackrat & for any others that need to measure water depth more than infrequently. You said you were going to pull your pump once again and put some tape on the down pipe at the water level so you could measure the water depth.

A better approach IMO is when you have the pump pulled up, attach a length of small dia plastic tubing to the down pipe & have the end of the plastic tubing at top of the pump. Bring the tubing out the top of the well and connect that end to a manifold where you can attach a pressure gage and Schrader valve. Now with that setup you can pressurize the tubing, slowly, and note peak reading. Multiply the reading by 2.31 and that figure will be the depth of the water above the lower end of the tubing. Oh, for a manifold, I used a brass T fitting. Compression fitting for the tubing and threaded on other 2 ends that would accept the pressure gage and Schrader valve.

At our old place I was having some problems similar to your and I needed to know the static water level. What I did a little differently is in place of pulling the down pipe, I tied a weight to the end of the tubing and let gravity help with lowering the tubing. Left the tubing in the well for several yrs and when ever I wanted to know the water level I just pressurized the tubing, and quick calc and I knew what the depth was.

I'd try and find out is your lack of water due to ground water level or are the wells water veins getting plugged. If the later I check on the possibility of fracking the well to open up more/new veins for water to flow through.

lets see - you only pull the pump when you have time, but never when you ran out and pull right away to see if the pipe/pump is wet to confirm if it dry or not ? is there a check valve AT the pump? I don't remember.

The well guys were just here. I went with a different company based on references and time. The price complete is $2800 to 200' including new line to the house and wiring, using my pump. Each additional foot is $9. They start in about an hour... It hurts but i am sick of this. I am going to keep the old well wired as it does actually have some water in it. The reason it stoped this morning is that one of the butt splices broke loose. It was fine when we put it back in but the weight and torque of the well must have broken it. Either way he said that the well is never going to support the house anymore no matter what I do to it. He said he is really surprised that it even went dry. I tend to believe him but at this point I am not sure what I wouldn't believe... I will update later with progress.

I do intend to keep this well wired. I "think" it will be enough to supply water to the barn so I do not have to run it off the new well. At this point it is worth trying since my labor is free.... :)

Thanks
Wade

All submersibles ahve a check valve as part of the pump.

Blackrat- l am curious as to where they are drilling the new well. Right beside the old one? Or more aligned with some of your neighbors' wells?

I can’t believe you waited this long! Good positive direction forward. Why not include the price of a new pump and take away and chance of it being a problem once everything is wired in and ready to go. I would just hate to have the guy come back and it is the pump that seems to be mal-funcitioning! Hope this brings back your water supply and makes the family happy too! Oh and if you are planning to use the old well for the barn water supply you will need another pump anyway.
