I pay about $100/month for city water (and sewer). $100/mo for 12 months = $1200 per year x 26 years = $31,200. If a good well system were installed by a a professional for an average cost of $8-12,000 and then maintained every few years (check air in tank, replace pressure switch, etc) you could come out way ahead. Wells are not that much trouble to maintain, problem is that nobody ever checks them until they're broke.
Yeah, the sewer is part of it OK but in the country with animals yould need separate metering cuz theres not much water proportion going the sewer/septic way. I agree. All it really takes is spot checking the pressure gauge and responding to indications and a good well will provide you with many tens of thousands of $ water for a few% sustaining outlay. Ours is 60+ yrs old and predates our ownership - perhaps a LOT. It had a gasoline engine running downwell pump via pushrods when we came here. We went to a jet pump then later to electric downwell [now 23yrs old]. A running toilet will pull it "dry" overnite, but it recovers fine apparently. Its always been able to support 20 horses and 2 families even in drought condition - rationing city water in town. Very good water. Were lucky for that for sure.

340' 9gpm. Well man says it is a good well. Still wont have it connected to the house until Monday. Final cost will be around $4500. Was hoping to get a Harley this year but think that is gonna have to wait. Just glad this is almost over!!!

If it makes you feel any better, I paid about that in Wis for a 55' well (but we built in what was a Nanny state...still is but at least now we have some hope if our Gov stays in office for another term). And you really didn't want that Harley anyway. They are very expensive what with all the clothing and tattoos and the new girlfriend.

Hehehe I have a couple of tattoo's from the NAVY already and a few Harley shirts so I am kinda a wannabe Harley owner right now. As to the girlfriend, nah, wanting the Harley to go off alone for a while. Great therapy when things like this well happen. :)

What's a Nanny state??

A Nanny state is where your state/local government decides what is best for you (I guess because you are too lazy or stupid to figure it out for yourself). It was once restricted to the coasts but pockets have developed inland (like Wisconsin).

Wisconsin took it upon themselves to dictate the rules on private well/septic systems, all leading to very costly installation/maintenance requirements. I understand their concerns about groundwater but as usual, people get jobs to enforce a 1,000% solution where a 100% solution would have worked.

I see it spreading...having recently built a new house, would be happy to share what the rest of the country will likely encounter in the future.

just a rant on my part but most of it is true.

Good to see you are on top of things blackrat. My new pump is going well too. It is a 30 litres a minute and 1 HP pump (Franklin) It has had a couple of good runs and filled my water tank and then the new Household pressure pump takes over from there. My old Bore pump was a 2 HP but the well/bore man and the salesman both reckoned it was overkill. Seems they were right.
Cheers

Great. It sounds like an excelletn well. 9gpm will provide more water than you will use even irrigating unless you get carried away with too many sprinkler heads :)

I know it must have hard to pull that $4500 away from the Harley, but in the long run, the Harley would have been a toy, having water is a necessity. Even if you only have to wait a year now before getting the Harley, it would have been real hard to go a year fighting water problems like you had and at $4500, I say you found yourself a deal. Glad to hear that things are back up and running.

Here in Washignton, it wasn't very many years ago that they made a run at requireing a meter on all private wells. It went to the nearest trash basket in a hurry.

Glad to see they nixed the illegal gun search laws in your state but we all know they will be back to try again. Here in Wisconsin the foxes were allowed to manage the hen-house for too long and we are paying for it dearly (#5 in per capita individual taxes in a state that ranks about #27 in per capita income...corporate taxes are high also). And taxes don't even include all the "fees" that were imposed as the former Gov tried to keep water in his leaky bucket. He has not been heard from since he left office...many people think he is in a federal witness relocation program and is now known as John Smith.

My 55' well on new construction cost about $5,000. Septic was close to $7,000.
