West Coast Smoke, UGH!

Window air conditioners I'm familiar with, recirculate indoor air and don't bring in any from outside. The reason it's in a window is, there is a second radiator on the exterior side that sheds the heat that the interior radiator collected.

Note I added a third link in my post above. It has diagrams showing where the smoke is most severe.

That's correct about window air conditioners... the filter is inside the room because it sucks in air from inside the room, cools it, and recirculates it back into the room.

Brownie & I just stepped outside to "check the night air". It's somewhat less stinky. My flashlight will shine clear across the lake and illuminate the cliffs. The cliffs are 920' distant from my front porch. Right now it is noticeably clearer. I think Mother Nature is playing games. Shifting wind patterns and alternating smoke densities.

One good thing - it's been really cool. So I don't have to open windows nor turn on fans to cool the house. Under "normal" conditions - we would be suffering here if I couldn't draw in the night air to cool off the house.

I don't want to seem greedy BUT....... It sure would be nice if SOMEBODY here in the PNW got some rain. H*LL - it could rain anywhere and we would all have SOME relief.

I had to drive into Cheney this afternoon. It's just grey everywhere. Everybody's saying - it will clear up in a couple days. I'll believe THAT when I see it.

My rain gauge is reporting 0.04in of rain tonight... first traces in over a month! The pavement is wet! Not near enough but it did a little to knock it down just a bit and I can take a half a full breath and not cough. Air quality still over 200 though but the moisture feels good. And here I am in the wet PNW wishing for rain. :confused3:

A picture from the Seattle waterfront looking south toward our seaport. Just hard to believe...

Rain - that's good news, Mark. H*LL NO - that's GREAT news. Your pic - looks like something out of a low budget sci-fi movie. It's even got the villain coming up out of the water.

Interestingly the haze from the fires has gotten all they way here to SE Michigan. I was running hay yesterday and looked at the sun and it looked like a yellow Cue ball. Very strange. Has to be the smoke haze from the fires.

Not all. My Fedders window mount has both a recirc setting and a fresh setting. On the fresh setting, there is a door that opens to allow ingress of outside air through the inside filter.

Those stand alone air purifiers work pretty well or at least did for me. Several years ago I had a nephew who was 4 years older than me and an amputee with only one leg who got prostate cancer while living in New Mexico. The doctors said the only thing to do was remove the prostate which he didn't want to do. This was about the time that Loma Linda University Hospital was doing trials on a new radiation treatment that specifically targeted the cancerous area. I can't remember the name of the procedure but it is being done all over the country now with great success. My nephew was accepted for the program and came out here to our place in Ca. which was great except for the fact that he was a chain smoker from the time he was 12 years old and neither of us smoked. He was considerate and went outside to smoke and of course pee several times during the night until one night he fell and couldn't get himself up. I got up and sat out with him while he had his smoke and told him that he could smoke in his bed room. After he left we tried leaving the windows open and every type spray we could find but it still lingered. My wife then bought a stand alone air cleaner and in 24-36 hours that room smelled like new. I was very impressed.

I have two ozone generators. One is portable, the other is built in to my furnace closet where it injects ozone into the duct work. Both have been successful is eliminating every odor I've encountered. My house was permeated with smoke from the southern Oregon fires.
