After all these years, I still lust after the '52 XK120 I grew up with. Fairly simple, good low-end torque, high speed when you wanted it, cornered like it was on rails, around 30mpg over the highway... a real pleasure to drive. Brakes were horrible, however, not to mention the electrics.... but that 3.5L DOHC engine was a beautiful thing. I'm with Roy on this.

You had a newer car than the guy next door and you envied him? But yes I know what you mean those crown vics had a lot of gewgaws and gimcracks on them compared to a Fairlane.

My parents got a year old 63 SS327 4sp Impala in '64 when I was a year old. I remember when I was 7 or 8, my Mom and Aunt street racing... My Mom could power shift that 4spd like a champ. For a larger car, it moved out pretty well with that 327... Her and my Aunt would giggle after blowing some guys doors off...

Amazing power in the 64 ss impala, I test drove one when I got out of active duty, 4 speed 300 hp cragars and new convertible top.It smoked badly so I took it back and bought this old guys cherry 2 dr hardtop, 283 powerglide. It served me well and rode like a dream. Traded it on a new 1970 Malibu Red Chevelle 2 dr hardtop.350 250hp 350 turbo.I kept it till the -amn vinyl top rusted out the entire back window and filled trunk with rain. I had no knowledge of replacing panels then. This Chevy was the most trouble-free one I ever owned..Gm sure put the mess on when they made the vinyl top models, chevelles, chevy 2 and cameros all rusted badly, no way to wax it enough to stop it.

Interesting. I think the classiest looking pickup ever made was the 1958 Chev Apache.

I too thought the 59 Chevy was ugly when it first came out, but I was comparing it to my 55 Bel Air. Having owned a 59 Impala for over 10 years, I have come to appreciate the style and beauty inherent in this car. It was the last Chevy designed by Harley Earle, and although it was a bit radical for the time, today I appreciate it for what it is...a classic beauty...especially the Spt Coupe. The 58 wasn't bad either. In my humble opinion, and this is all about opinions, the decade from 1955 through 1964 was the apex of Chevrolet styling up to this date. Granted those cars technically can't compare to what we have today, but in terms of styling, they have no equal.

I'd like to have 51 Studebaker with the bullet nose and 4 "suicide" doors...Mom and Dad had one when I was born in 53 and love the pictures of that cool car!

When I was young and we saw a 59 Chevy in front of us with its slanted red eyes glowing, we said it reminded us of an Asian she-devil. :D

The thing about that era is, almost everything was fixable! Some of the slush-o-matic trannys were not wrench friendly, but most everything else was.
