I would like to keep the old landline number and not pay $80 a month and thinking of taking Consumer Cellular 13.95 a month plan including flip phone

If you guys haven't heard of it, there is a website called Swappa.com that sells used cell phones of various condition.
I have bought four mint condition phones over the years and have never had any problems with them. The savings over new from a provider-store are tremendous.

Verizon because the Southwest where I live is largely rural, except for a few large cities. In many of the remote areas I travel to Verizon is the only carrier that has coverage. ATT in my area only has good service in cities and along interstate highways. The other carriers are somewhere in between. I guess this is why Verizon is the high cost leader.

^This!

Tried them all in rural Nevada and Verizon is the only one with towers outside of the cities. Kind of funny...ATT had to do some landline maintenance in my area and the crew had to get Verizon phones because their ATT phones had no signal. But there are still vast areas of Nevada with no cell service. The towers are mainly along major highways and Nevada has very few of those. All the clear areas in the below map have no coverage. Keep in mind that it is 400 miles going across Nevada east - west, and 600 miles north-south, so many miles with no coverage. That red band wandering across northern Nevada is Interstate 80, the red band from Reno south to Las Vegas is US Highway 95. Why I carry an InReach (satellite communication device).

Lotsa providers "give" you a new cell phone every year or so but you pay for it with higher plan costs. Everybody knows this of course and some folks just gotta have the latest and greatest. I really don't care. Before I got the Mint service I needed to get a newer cell phone to work with my hearing aids. So I bought a new old stock Samsung Galaxy S20. It was the cheapest cell phone that would work with my new hearing aids. The phone itself must be at least 6 years old. The display is remarkable in it's clarity and color rendition and resolution. I can't imagine how much better they can get,but surely it will be improved. Nevertheless it is plenty good enough for me, takes great pictures and video, and cost 200 bucks. A one time cost. So If a person wants a cheap plan and doesn't want the latest and greatest then why not buy an older but still new phone? I am quite happy with my phone, it works well with my hearing aids, takes great pictures, a feature I hardly ever use, and is mine. And if I upgrade it will be a Samsung S21 and will probably cost only about 200 bucks because I won't be buying another phone until I break my phone.

In electronic recycling, everyone started locking their phones and not unlocking them prior to donation. It was such a hassle and time sink to find the owners or crack the phones that we just stopped selling or looking at them all together. They just go straight to the downline, third party crushers.

Has anyone here ever used one of those cellphones that are capable of texting in areas with no cell service ?

We use Spectrum mobile which uses Verizon towers. $30 a month unlimited text, data and talk. Had them for 3 years and very pleased with their service.
