What is this and how do I fix it?

Yep.. the pics are good.

if it is leaking at the 'nut'.. I'm guessing the oring I mentioned earlier.. unless it is actually a leak from the back side of that flange above the nut then running down.. or from the back side of the pump even.. etc.

looks like it is time for a 'looksee'

If RickB was here.. I'm sure he's know right off the bat... I'm only guessing where that other line runs off to.. might not be ps.. etc..

Oh... the big blue pipe that dead-ends behind the foot plate is not connected to the part in question but rather appears to be indirectly connected to the silver part (pump?) above the valve we're talking about.

You should do what I recommended in an earlier post, Clean the area and dry. Start the tractor and look closely at the brass nut area and see where the leak is, then you will know.

There is a leak detector fluid that you add to the hydraulic fluid and it will fluoresce when a black light is used. You can use this for the complete hydraulic system. This dye can be purchased at NAPA. You can also buy a complete kit for any fluid.

Guys... thanks!

I did what you said and cleaned the part and had a buddie watch where it leaked from since it leaks as soon as it's started. Upon starting fluid came UP from the inside of the part through the 'nut' which turned out not to be a nut at all.

From your inputs we figured it most likely was an o-ring. We took the part off and replaced 6 o-rings; [1] on the outside of the 'nut' in question and [1] on the inside; [1] on the bottom bolt that holds the big blue pipe on; [2] on the big blue pipe; and [1] at the compression fitting.

The 'nut' turned out to be a hallow bolt. There is a silver tube that comes down from the pump and through the hallow bolt which allows hyd fluid to go into the part. The probable bad o-ring was on the INSIDE of the hallow bolt and seals the silver tube to the hallow bolt.

Fired it up and put a load on and no leaks!

This repair got the tractor in service but it didn't fix the post hole digger problem, that is, the post hole digger runs but the hydraulics will not lift the digger.

Is this something you can help me with or should I repost as a new problem?

Thanks again!

Deffinately repost as a new thread, as this one was sidetracked with the leak issue.

you see those hollow bolts alot in banjo fitting applications.

Sevans,

When you took every thing apart, did the brass thing you were talking about look like this?

kind of but not exactly.

your pic shows threads on both sides of the 'nut' whereas mine didn't have threads on the left side of your pic. Where your's shows an o-ring on the left side with the larger threads my o-ring was on the right side with the smaller threads. the o-ring that I believe failed is the one that would be on the inside of the hollow shaft where there was a groove in the shaft for the o-ring to fit.

In other words... if you chopped of the left side of your pic (the larger threads) then it would look like mine.

guys...

I know I'm no expert but would it be helpful if I posted a detailed expanation of the repair?

Perhaps you can use it if someone else has the same problem.

You may refer to the PDF file I posted on my first reply to this thread. The file reads 1710 hyd pump. 1710 does not have an inlet scree like my 1700. you do have a cartridge type inlet filter. you may have sedimentation on the bottom floor of the differential housing that I ended up wet vacuuming it and got several pints of mush out of it. Changing oil and filter alone can't clean the sedimentation there. Attached with this you'll find the section tat covers hydraulic in general for your 1710.

Jc,

Did you replace just the one o-ring at the middle or all in the kit? Did you prove to your self that only one o-ring was leaking?
