We hired a guy from Florida the other week, I stopped in the office to meet him (as well as some other things) this morning.

Guy is like 55 years old, relocated up from Florida.

Guy's first day was Monday, Tuesday, the operations manager gets a text from the guy informing him that Monday was his last day (I asked about the "new guy" and that's what the guys told me, and at first, I thought they were pulling my leg).

Guy is slightly older than me, and there is NO WAY in tarnation I'm texting someone after one day on the job that I'm not coming back.

This wasn't a minimum wage job, guy had experience, and we knew the company he worked for. I'm just left scratching my head dumbfounded. Who takes a job for one day and then leaves via text?

I think it has more to do with the person than the age. I've seen that at all ages, usually more for early 20's. People of all ages are weird.

Wouldn't someone there simply ask him?
I hate texting. I get texts from people and I tell them please call or see me in person. In general as time goes by people are losing communication skills.
The guy could be quitting for any of 100 reasons.

Knew a guy that hired on as Sheriff's Deputy. You can work for up to a year while you're waiting for a spot at the Academy. He worked several months with no problem. Got his date for Training which at the time was something like 16 weeks. Drove 6 hours to get there. Two days later he showed back up at the Office saying his wife missed him too much and made him come home.

He probably got a better job offer.

When looking for a job, people apply at multiple places. He probably took the first one that called back just to get started.

Happened to me once. But I was at the place for 4 days when the much better offer came in. I quit in person but gave no notice.

And to answer your question, we are tired of all the bull stuff.
I cant keep up with the PC nonsense, people hate me and show violence towards me for my political views, and I just want to go the store and buy something without them asking for all my personal information!

I get that, but it's like cheating on a spouse and getting a divorce. Sooner or later Karma is pain in the tush.

I just figured if you're in your mid 50's, and we find out about you from the company you worked for, it really doesn't reflect to well on your previous employeer to boot.

I expect this kind of behavior from a 20 year old, but not someone in their 50's. Long story short, don't burn bridges when it comes to employment (perhaps I should say that because I did tell a guy exactly what I thought when he wanted me to sign a 23 page no compete clause LOL).

I'm more puzzled how this thread has 6 replies but zero views! :confused3:

Sig,
I used to feel the same as you.
What changed my mind has been witnessing employers caring less and less about employees.
I see guys forced out as they age because they are slower now, and because they are high paid and have the "OLD" benefits package.

Companies just dont care anymore. So you have to do what is best for you, and dont waste time.

I have witness even less consideration when people quit a job. First day on the job, lunch time comes and the person never says a word to anyone about leaving, just never returns after lunch. That was at a Fortune 500 company with the best paying jobs in the surrounding area.

Long time ago before I was in Law Enforcement I worked at the county jail. Had a new guy start and I was his FTO. He showed up at the housing unit and I was going to take him out into the day area with the inmates. He had a wide eyed look about him when I said "come on lets go". He said, what? I looked at him and told him it's ok. I'll be with you. He was like, you want me to go out there with them? Voice was cracking now. I ain't going out there... I asked what do you mean? This is your job. Come on. What to you expect? He said not this. Well, he never made it out into the day area. Lasted about 20 minutes.

Joe, of course I retired a couple of months short of 25 years from the police department; had gone up through the ranks and was a captain about the last half of my career. The biggest crew I had at one time was 5 years in command of the communications division where I had more than 150; a mix of police officers, 9 sergeants, and 3 lieutenants plus male and female civilian employees. I was later commander of the personnel division and did the hiring of new recruits to be police officers. So yep, you find good ones and bad ones of all ages, races, and sexes.

Incidentally, as a lieutenant, I spent about a year and a half as a watch commander in the city jail.

Over the last 10 years or more until recently, folks tried to hang on to any job they could get. I read this morning that while jobs are up (yay), quits are also up. More people are quitting jobs now, the article went on to say folks are getting other jobs or are confident they can get another job. I don't know where I read the article or I would link it here.

When is the last time you heard of a business giving an employee a weeks notice that they are going to be "terminated" (let go).

Usually the HR officer escorts them off the property in one swift event.

So, old or young, the work place is just a place to have one's expectations challenged.

I had a new coworker staying with me who was way overqualified... he had his MS in Forestry and had just come on as an entry level technician. Two weeks after he started he was offered a real job with better pay and benefits but wasn't going to take it as he had just come to work for us. I guess that I said "Are you ****ing NUTS!" , or at least that was what he said after thanking me for changing his mind. You know within a couple of weeks if the job is a good fit; with one day on the job would it really have been better if he had given 2 weeks notice and worked it off?

I think there is a lot of people moving around because there are more opportunities out there. Texting after the first day or any amount of time is pretty childish.

I did take a job offer one time and received a better job offer three days later, it was in between my two week notice so I didn't actually start the job and I called them to tell them I took another offer..

Years ago people had loyalty to the company they worked for, that doesn't happen very often anymore, company's today don't seem to care if you stay or go and I have seen company's lay people off that would have retired is a VERY short time, the company's have no loyalty to there employees why should the employees have loyalty to them.. My dad worked from 18 years of age to 65 for the power company, I worked for four company's in a shorter time frame..

....

May of 2017..... I got 6 weeks notice my job of 30 years was over. The company outsourced production and let go all 65 production workers(can't blame them, made no financial sense to keep production there). If I wanted my severance package, I had to stay to the end of the 6 weeks. I was ticked for about 2 hours, called a contact, got a job interview set up, and had a job offer within about 24 hours. So I was unemployed negative 41 days!

I have seen it couple places.

Currently at a client site the facility manager is has been given notice. He is in about a month window to wrap up and document some projects for others to take over.

I have been screwed over every which way by employers BIG companies and small. You do not owe your employer a darn thing (as far as loyalty). 9/10 will completely mess you over and not even feel bad.

Some industries are far worse than others. I got out of the auto industry (working for manufacturers) and into utilities and am so much happier.

People are pretty stupid too. Just because someone has worked somewhere or done something 30 or 40 years doesn't mean a thing (besides they show up enough to stay employed).

You can be a parasite at a company or terrible at a trade and just screw people over alot.

All that said, dude should grow a pair, show up face to face and say sorry it didn't work out (I would provide an explanation, but that's not necessary).

Good help is very hard to find. We get people like that occasionally. But usually they come to interview, start the hiring process. Then it's excuses why they can't do something with the hiring process. Some say yup want the job, then never show up for the drug test.

It's in all age groups that this happens. I once took a job stocking shelves in a grocery store. Got hired on, worked one night. Next morning I got a call from a different place to start in a couple of days. Better job, couple bucks more an hour. Was pretty much a no brainer. Worked the second night stocking shelves and informed them when I went in that it was gonna be my last night.

Now I have taken a job before, worked a few days and left mid shift. Job was in a factory. Ended up being allergic to something in the manufacturing process. I was itching head to toe and couldn't take it any more. Told the shift supervisor what was going on and said I wouldn't be back.
