For me, any member here who doesn't provide their real name or hides behind a false alias is usually dismissed straight out as a troll, fake or flake. More so if they hide behind a facade of where they live, ie: "anywhere and everywhere" or those who claim to have "any number of tractors", etc. Those here who put an honest name and their own face and location on TBN will have more credibility to me than a hundred trolls or fakes combined. Too bad TBN does NOT require something like Facebook registration to qualify for membership here.
I use a pseudonym on TBN. My profile deliberately does not display my real name. Nor do I have my face displayed. That you regard people like me as being worthy of usual dismissal as a fake, flake, or troll is, in my professional opinion as a information systems manager, based on faulty assumptions and ignorance of information security principles as applied to personal privacy and protection.
There are a lot of nut cases out there who would love to cause others physical or mental pain. Everyone with a tractor has a high value, fairly easy to steal and moderately easy to fence asset. Knowing who you are, what you have, and where you are makes it easy to case you, figure out when you're not there, and the best times to rip you off. You don't have to make it easy for them to do so; which is exactly what your wide-open, full disclosure stance does.
Based on my postings, you can figure out what town and state I live in, what kind of tractor(s) I have, and where I purchased them. With more digging, you can probably find my real name by cross-checking various other internet sites. Which means I'm not likely to be hit by lazy criminals, and the serious ones will quickly realize the risk to benefit ratio won't pay off in my case.
For me, a TBN member has less credibility if he or she doesn't make any sense in a posting, assuming of course that the post wasn't in a sarcastic mode, or wasn't intended to be taken seriously. But you might not realize that until you've hung around here for a while and gotten a feel for people. Oh yeah, and links and photos to back up a statement go a lot farther to establishing creds than a supposedly real name and allegedly person photo.
