Good article in yesterday's Sun:

Manufacturers organize to combat destructive Ontario policies | FUREY | Ontario

For this Ontario manufacturer - $8k increase in govt electric fees, in just one month. Their analysis of the impact of Ontario's Cap N Trade kicking in Jan '17 - $127,000 cost adder annually. How many govt budgets ever come in low ?

One of their VPs said it well - "We don't worry about our competition anymore," says Jocelyn Williams Bamford, Vice President of Automatic Coating. "We fear the government."

If the agenda is to totally eradicate manufacturing, then we are on the right track.

Unfortunately, the government is now the ruling class, the citizens are now the peasants. Funny as that sounds, it becoming reality. Ours jumped 15% this year for no clear explanation from our government which, by the way has a piece of ownership in the utility that generates the power.

Maybe a bit off topic here but it's worth sharing: Got a quote just today for running 200amp secondary service underground from the meter/rack out to the proposed house site which is at 458'...for $29,500.00 plus another $5,400.00 for the trenching / backfill portion.

A little off topic... just had 2" conduit run 900' and horizontal boring was most cost effective and the area had parts that are heavily wooded... it sure worked slick and really disturbance.

What size conduit and conductors?

Holy moly! That scares the square nuts out of me. I will be doing that next spring. $29k plus 5.5k for trenching is nuts!

I really like that the area had no disturbance. Was it cost effective? Off topic of course....

Fees like that are why I get irate when I hear about people not being "allowed" to go off-grid. As these connect-fees keep skyrocketing, it just makes more sense (to me at least) to go off-grid - why pay a fortune to a monopoly just to get the "privilege" of paying a continuously escalating monthly bill ?

I had quotes from 12k to 16k to bring in Comcast.

In the end after much work I was able to have it installed by signing a 3 year business agreement for about $300 per month... which is $10,800

The install crew really knew what they were doing... being heavily wooded they were concerned about disrupting the root systems which might lead to problems...

The crew installed two junctions about equal spaced...

I have underground direct bury cable installed by the utility in 1978... they have had to repair it several times... said it will need to be replaced... thing is the utility was paid to install it once... I think they should be responsible if they decided it needs to be replaced...

This summer I need to clear a 30' wide path through ponderosa and aspen 550' long to get the main power to my property to a newly constructed polebarn. It will be overhead on poles. The utility company will set the poles and hang the wire after I clear the timber. Then from the polebarn, I will run underground 340' to the future homesite.

I helped the neighbor run 300' of underground in conduit so got some good experience on how to do it.

I just got a new meter installed, and I was talking with lineman doing job. He asked what I was paying, I said about .10 cents a kWh, after taxes and connection fee. He said I could get it down to .06, but you had to agree to the latest smart meter, that gives power coop to control your 220 appliances. I was stunned they could do that with the newest smart meters. I don't really understand why I needed a new meter as they installed a new digital meter not 15 months ago when I put up my solar system. Actually I like new meter better. My concern is government eventually controlling your electric use through smart meters. Your thoughts. How does it work and could it be defeated. HS
