Okay, here goes nothing.
I totaled up kilowatt hours and divided that into my total bill for an average cost of $0.28/kwhr. That is what I pay to Hydro One.

Fireplaces are pretty but not very effective.

or very efficient ,once you consider the heat that it puts out is also sucked up the chimney like a vacuum cleaner. one has to consider gasoline / oil for the chain saw, the chainsaw gas or diesel to haul it back to your place, the log splitter, the time you put into it . What other expense comes with using fire wood as a heat source. Is it really cheaper to use, once you figure all the expense ? I have no clue. I cut too much wood as a young lad living at home. Every saturday was fire wood gathering day. No more wood burning as a heat source for me.

my latest bill from APCO is about 11 1/2 cents per kwh. this is in VA. 935 kw for $107.

Im in Central VA and on AEP (taxes, fees, included) our is between 9 and 12 cents per kwh. It seems to vary a little each month..

To the OP - I was in a small 2 bedroom apt and my electric bill for it was more expensive than a house I later moved into. Apts have very little insulation or energy efficient appliances - there is no incentive for the builder/owner to spend pay for better stuff.

A fireplace will suck more heat out of your house than it will put in. Have you ever heated with wood? There's much work involved. Cutting, splitting, hauling, lifting several times.

I think an outside wood burner is the answer if one really wants to get serious about using wood as a heat source. Fireplaces are pretty but not very effective.

My fireplace is pretty and effective. Two 6 inch combustion air inlets from outside and sealed doors. No conditioned air is going up my chimney. Heats 3600 square feet without assistance down to zero degree outside temperature. I built and designed my home to be heated by this unit. Even heat through out house.

I enjoy heating with Firewood. I have a very efficient system for gathering and storing my firewood. I love being in the forest in the winter gathering wood. It keeps my winter fat down too.

Pictured is the back side of my fireplace showing the 6 inch inlets. I was rescueing a bird that day.

I'm still not talking about using firewood as a main heat source. I would really like to use it in my garage for projects and use it in the house to enjoy during cold temperatures as well as burn all the paperwork I acumilate. It would not be the worst back up heat if the fireplace was already in the house I bought. I have grown up with a fireplace as a smaller way to heat the house and enjoy that. I grew up with propane heat and think if I bought a house with propane or natural gas. I would love to use the fireplace in the morning and use it in the event of a power out. It would be a 0.0$ increase in my home if it already had the set up.

I know people to use it as a main source of heat which is a bad choice. Very inefficient and all your time will be spend tending to a fire.

Hope you guys know what I mean

I know quite a few people that burn wood stoves for their main source of heat. Mostly because they have property and a wood source, and time to cut it, and don't have the money to pay a huge electric bill in the winter.

Wow, seeing some of these rates, I guess I feel pretty good about $0.10 KWh! Must be the hydroelectric power source.
